Taggs Mx5

Well unless you are going to force him to sell the current car he has, or perhaps fund him buying it as well as the current one, hes never going back to that original car so its utterly pointless trying to beat him down with your uber knowledge is a waste of everyones time.

Get a life, and go find another thread to trash.

What has any of that got to do with anything? I've been looking at the car in question long before he mentioned it in this thread - My initial concern was the seemingly high ride height; http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=65519

The fact that he has been to view the car that I'm interested in, but is a fairly expensive trip away from me, means that he could probably help me a great deal, which is why I am asking the questions I have.

I do not see what the problem is?

The vendor is hardly going to say "Oh yes, crank pulley is screwed mate" - He'll lie through his teeth to get a viewing, which is one step closer to getting it sold.

Whereas Taggart can give me a bit more detail of what he saw, and perhaps I can make a more informed decision on whether this car is worth viewing or not. The RS is bloody rare, so it isn't easy to just move on and find another one.

Again, failing to see the issue?

I've been reliably informed that these engines do not suffer from the same keyway issues that the early 1.6s did. Can you describe in what it was that lead you to the conclusion you did?

that was my thought also, but when digging deeper it seems to be happening to the long nose crank cars too. The problem isn't with the pulley and crank assembly it self, its the numpty doing the job and not torquing it up properly

I happen to saved the threads muffin found for me
http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=163356
and a slightly dodgy bodge:
http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=400260

the pulley in question was wobbling about ever so slightly at idle and the harmonic stabilizer was all over the shop

Hard tops are 'teh super gay'.

When you buy a convertible sports car like this, it is important that you realise what the roof is for.

You do not put the roof down when the weather is nice. You put the roof UP when it is raining. That is all. It is an umbrella, not a roof.

Anything that removes the ability to drop the roof as soon as the rain stops is completely lame and thus a hardtop is also completely lame.

Even if you are going to Sainsburys at 10pm, if it isnt raining, the roof comes off.

The hardtop is quite nice on longer journeys and firms up the chassis quite well.

On track and longer journeys it is invaluable. I bought mine for £150.

Didn't S-VT actually had 165bhp didn't it? As opposed to pretty much all 1.8 MK2s having 140, or was that just the 2.5 RS? There are too many models - its confusing :(

they had sub 150bhp 1989 to 2005 as firestar mentioned.

The S-VT and RS Mk2 are essentially the same car but the latter is more focused and the former more a ghia esque trim level.

I don't think they make a 2.5 RS, just a Mk1 and Mk2.

I've been reliably informed that these engines do not suffer from the same keyway issues that the early 1.6s did. Can you describe in what it was that lead you to the conclusion you did?

All ('89-'05) can suffer from it, but it was only ever a real issue until mid 1991.

The issue was never really to do with the keyway iirc, rather that the crank was mis torqued and led the keyway to fail.

Even in a worst case scenario, most can be loctite fixed and it is unlikely to be an issue within 10k miles of a cambelt change.

A replacement 1.6 engine can be had for £100, hardly something to worry about even if it's valid really.

True, but most people will want a garage to fit it.

Not a massive job compared to an Audi but still not a job i would want to do alone.

A decent engine (1.6) with S/H and a warranty is more like £300 by the time it is delivered anyway. :)

Lets get the thread back on track

1 week in and I'm loving driving again... its been top down all week in the morning and night.

Waiting to get paid to order my typhoon kit, exhaust and a grill for the front (black so its not "look at me") and some yellow stuff pads for when I finally track it.

Stance wise I'm thinking it does need lowering but its on bilstiens so I'm thinking I'll just use a koni springs kit. Anyone had any experience with them?

Going to track it before I do anything suspension wise so no rush. Also need to sell my free 16 inch standard wheels and find some 15's that fit over my bigger brakes as 16" track tyres are twice the price of 15's

Fresh pics of a washed car!

Trackday Wheels I'm currently looking at:

Or

http://www.wheelbasealloys.com/15_I..._with_195_50_15_VR_Toyo_Proxes_T1-R__P519_166

what do you lot recon?

what you want from track wheels is that for them to be light and of course of decent offset and width depending on the kind of grip levels you want and the tyre size you want to run.

The Mazda On Track guys sell 6UL wheels from the state which they rave about. Supposed to be very light for the money:

I'm going more street with my car with Rota Zero Plus wheels and a touch too much lows.

And so it begins

Backbox goes on tomorrow morning..
