Still remember seeing a volvo head on into a mini outside my old work about 15 years ago, the 740gl (from memory) literally didn't have a scratch on it, the mini driver was air lifted away dunno if she lived or not.

crazy over engineering, if two volvos hit each other does the world end?

It looks worse in real life as I couldn't get the car out to take better pictures . Most the impact was taken from the side step I think .

From what I can tell front bumper plastic and metal , front passenger wing , front passenger door , rear passenger door , side step , wheel , tyre , drive shaft and some other metal round there

Looks more like it was 20-30mph if that...it's often very hard to judge someone else's speed when they are ploughing into you.

May have well been as I say its the first accident I have been in and it just went wallop lol . She came off a 60mph road to the roadabout.

At the end of the day its a car that can be replaced and no one was seriously hurt .

Whilst I doubt this impact was at 50mph, I have no doubt the offending car will look significantly worse off.

Apparently when I was a toddler I slept through an accident when we had the old school box volvo estate. It was a rear impact on the motorway, the volvo had a few scratches on the bumper, the car behind was crumpled and a write off.

Well that's completely contrary to how a car should perform in a crash. You want it to crumple as it takes away the energy.

This took place at least 15 years ago, the car would now be at least 20 years old. So yeah, not much in the way of crumple zones back then.

Originally I said 40/50 , I have no idea on the speed its just what I thought , if someone wants to sit in one of these and let someone hit you then see if you can tell

Side impact crash test results for the XC90 are outstanding

Side impact
The results were well balanced and among the lowest seen by Euro NCAP so far. The seat-mounted thorax and abdominal airbag and head-protecting curtain worked well to safeguard the driver in the side impact and the pole test. The curtain bag also protects occupants in the mid and rear seats.
