Looking to change my roadside cover to include me and wifey.

Looking at The AA.....has anyone got the parts and garage bills cover? This is around £50 a year more than onward travel but seems worth it to me?

£180ish for both on this level or £131 with onward travel instead (quidco offer £50 off both too)

I've only needed to be recovered once, look after your car and it will look after you. Brakedown cover is like mobile phone insurance, a false economy...

I've had to claim on mobile phone insurance as well as using my breakdown cover on 3 occasions. It's certainly not a false economy for me.

I've been with Autoaid for 3 years and can't fault em. Then again I've never had to use them and at £38/yr I don't feel ripped off

My Westfield is IMMACULATE and perfectly maintained.

However, it has broken down once - the bolt securing the CPS sheared, stranding me 180 miles from home in the middle of the North York Moors. RAC van arrived in 40 mins, new bolt fitted - no probs, on my way home within the hour.

There is no way good servicing or maintenance could have prevented this.

I also had a breakdown in the Sierra when the alternator bracket fell off (yes, fell off!) on a freshly built engine - someone obviously forgot to torque up the bolts when refitting the engine.

That's what breakdown assistance covers - the unexpected.

Saying you wont suffer a breakdown because you maintain and look after your car is naive.

Why does there have to be a catch? Because it's cheaper?

It works because some people forget to fill in their claim forms and pop them in the post.

So long as you have a debit/credit card on you at all times when driving and are able to pay the recovery mob upfront, and then send your form off in the post (takes about a minute to complete), you'll get reimbursed within a week.

When you think about it, it's not much cheaper at all.

I've been quoted £131 for me and my wife to have personal cover in any car. With quidco giving me £50, it make it £81 or £40.50 each. I think I'd rather stick with that for the sake of £2 a year to save the messing about of claiming if I were to break down.

I have AA Roadside with parts and garage bill cover. I've used it once - the alternator went on my 530i. The AA came, said 'The alternator has gone', towed it to the garage, who replaced it. I paid a £25 excess.

£150 - £50 Quidco.

I get basic AA free with my bank account. If you'd ever even consider getting mobile phone insurance and road side insurance upgrade your bank account - it's the cheapest way to do it.

I have RAC membership, just part of a family policy my old man has, tbh no matter how well maintaned your car is that doesn't help when some **** drives into the back of you and makes your car undrivable 100 miles away from home in the middle of nowhere!
no idea how much the family policy is, but we've had it for 5 years or so and i think my old man is the only person not to have used it!!

The RAC specifically state they will not recover you after an accident so if this is why you pay for it you are wasting your money. After a no fault accident there are numerous ways to have the car recovered free anyway.

Cars break down, no matter how well you look after them. For the sake of £60 a year (cheaper than mobile phone insurance) I'd rather not risk it.

Some car insurance policies include this as one of the added free 'attractions', but might of course have already increased the premiums to compensate!

We are with NFU, as our house is insured with them as well.

RAC Membership does not cover:
– Vehicle Recovery following a road traffic
accident, fire, theft, act of vandalism or any other
incident covered by a policy of motor insurance.

However, if requested by You, RAC may arrange
Recovery of Your Vehicle following a road traffic
accident, fire, theft or act of vandalism but You
will be liable for payment of the associated cost
of such Recovery

What they've done is provided you assistance as the non-fault victim of an accident, which they will recover from the third party insurer. This is a service anyone can get for free irrespective of whether they have paid for cover or not if they are involved in a non fault accident.

So, I say again, if your reason for purchase is to provide recovery in the event of an accident, you are doing it wrong.
