£7000 Hatchback ?

Well, the savings won't be a huge amount especially if you only do 7-8k a year. If you were doing 20,000+ and slogging it out at a constant 70mph on motorways all the time then a frugal diesel would probably net you a significant saving

Exactly.

8000 Miles @ 30MPG = 266 Gallons of fuel. 129.9p/l = £5.90/Gallon. So 8000 Miles = £1570.
8000 Miles @ 45MPG = 177 Gallons of fuel. 133.9p/l = £6.08/Gallon. So 8000 Miles = £1076.

Is it REALLY worth owning a clattery 4-pot diesel, just for a potential saving of £41 a month? (And that's being pessimistic with the MPG from the petrol car).

YOU FORGOT THE TAX!!1

Hilarious suggestions. Once again Motors fails to cater for someone who has little interest in having a fast/sporty car.

Jono8's suggestion is a tidy one if you like them, and is still a current model. It fits all of the criteria, too - 44MPG combined, reasonably nippy (140bhp/8.6 seconds to 60) and reasonable to tax (£155 for 6 months - the same as my 1.6 Focus of around the same age, but much slower).

Worst spec me thread ever.

OP just get a Ford Focus 1.6/2.0 Titanium depending on how much you want to pay for tax and insurance.

I've been reading that supposedly Fiesta's are rated the best in their class.
Any recommendation on which engine between 1.2 1.4 and 1.6? Is 1.6 much better than the 1.4?

I reckon you could spend 3-4k and find something to meet your requirements and you wouldn't have to take out such a large loan.

Perhaps a Skoda fabia vrs diesel? Small and nippy enough with good economy.

Is the 1.6 SE FSI Golf sufficiently powered to feel fun to drive?

I will probably end up test driving a few, just not sure if 1.6 is what I should be looking for a Golf at as it's a bigger car than the Polo/Fiesta

Thanks

It depends how you classify fun, and also what to you is expensive in terms of tax and insurance?

My car has 200bhp, only costs £980 a year on insurance, and tax is £210 a year. Combined with the fact I can get 30mpg, its pretty cheap to run for the performance.

Plus, I'm also younger than you, so I feel rather blessed on the insurance part. :p

My mate had a 1.4TDi Polo, he loved it. It got written off by a taxi and within days of getting the money from the insurance company he had bought.... another 1.4TDi Polo.

He is the most boring man on the planet, mind.
