Do make sure you reset all the settings to defaults though. (Preferences, factory defaults) That prevents a lot of problems, you can then set them back to how you like.
I second this, it may indeed prevent a lot of common issues.
Uninstalling the driver beforehand can fix some issues as well, I don't usually do that but if you do some software changes or experience some problems, it may be a good idea to uninstall the old driver before updating to the latest one.
