new car sub 2k

Yeah, I just mean they will be generally cheaper to repair if they do go wrong, and in terms of fuel, you won't save much going with a Diesel ZS over a Petrol Focus.

Focus service parts are silly cheap, they are so cheap to run that the fact they 'only' do 35MPG is balanced by the fact you are not driving a ticking time bomb.

They dont do 35mpg anyway if driven carefully. I did a week's work in one, and averaged a calculated from fill mid 40's (it doesnt have a computer).

I know, that's why buying a horrible clattery diesel isn't worth it here. 40mpg isn't unusual when driving sensibly.

You can probably get more aftermarket parts for a Focus, I haven't found repairs too bad. OEM clutch kit was just under £100, and a waterpump is £20 and you don't need to have the cambelt off to change it, good as I'm lazy. :p

If the Focus will do 40mpg, seems daft not to go for that. :)

When some of you are saying a 1.6 Focus, typically what year would this be around the 2k mark?

What about a Ford Puma for under 2k? ( throwing this idea into the wind :D )

Puma's are cool. Basically a Fiesta with a fancy bodykit so will be quite cheap for mechanical parts and quite cheap to run, especially the 1.4 version. Probably not so much for body bits, but as long as you don't crash that should be fine :)

At 2k, I'd probably say an 02-03 Focus is about right, or a very good and well specced 01.

unfortunately rural area means massive pot holes and no one fixing them, there's actually a section of single track road here about 5 miles from home where half the road surface has gone! my sisters toyota mrS doesn't like coming home too much...

Ah not so good then.

My rural area isn't so unfortunate.

An MX5 would be win where I am.

Suggestions of the Focus are sensible though.

You know, for £2k I'd just buy a cracking low mileage 306 GTi6 and sod the MPG! you will get about 35MPG if you drive like a nun, but it's difficult not to give it beans!

Sorry, how does a GTi6 even come under cheap to run / cheap to insure?!

It's all relative, I used a Xsara VTS (same car) for 250 mile a week commute at 21 and found it cheap to insure and run for the drive it delivered.

Averaged 30mpg bang on over whole time I had it and I hardly do any motorway driving.
