I kinda have a bit above. The trick would be to have a tube that is shorter than the height of the column that can be supported by a tube of that width. Even then I think Acidhell2 might be right that the pressure from above the column would stop it spilling out of the top, though I'm sure I've read that it can be done.

Uhh no it wouldn't.
Find largest tidal height difference of water and it would work every six hours. 
Tide comes in... open sluice gate, in rush of water through turbine = power.
Close sluice gate... Tide goes out... Open sluice gate, out rush of column of water through turbine = (slightly less) power

My Ideas:
All roads and paths should be able to absorb kinetic energy.
New gloves to be worn while masturbating by men or women, these gloves plug into an outlet that collects the kinetic energy produced
Sound energy collection near the motorways, Sound energy can be transfered into heat energy.

Given that I've heard that you'd have to scream continuously for about 18 months to boil enough water for a cup of tea, I can't see this being particularly viable.

Nothing wrong with my river idea! The potential energy in the natural current in them is huge.
I think you'd struggle to find a single river that could provide hundreds or thousands of MW's of power. If it was that simple, why have hydroelectric dams? Why not just have the generator rooms plonked into the natural river that was there before
