Rift: Planes of Telera Beta

I have spent some good time with this game now up till level 21, and i have to say, i think it is absolutely excellent. To give you an idea of my player path, i played EQ1 seriously for about a year and a half, quit for personal reasons, and since then have not been able to get back into any mmorpg again, and not for lack of trying

Games that did not stick: WoW, EQ2, SWG, Planetside, Guild Wars.... probably more.

To me, this game makes me feel nostalgic about my time with EQ, but with loads of genre advancements bolted on. Its a proper fully fledged fantasy mmorpg. Its what EQ2 should have been.

I've just skipped to the last page of this thread... and that comment makes me interested!

EQ1 has eaten more of my time than all other games put together. And for the most part I've enjoyed all those wasted hours :p

Thanks, I've applied the VIP key to my account.

What do I do now?

beta just ended so you need to wait till the next beta, which i think is starting on the 4th of feb.

Think if youve made an account and entered a vip beta key they will email you two days before with download link ect.

Right seeing as lots of people have varying opinions on it I have no idea who is still willing to make a guild when the game comes out so please say if you are interested.

Im still up for a guild. The latest Beta was just as fun as the others. Really enjoying the game so far.

Biggest problem is deciding what calling/souls to choose. So far i've tried out the Warrior and Rouge callings. But i really want to try a cleric now as I've never really played a healing spec before. I also really like the idea of a melee dps/tank/healer and think it would be an awesome class for leveling. Plus I'd have no problems finding groups later on because I can heal.

I the next Beta i'll try a Cleric, with the souls of Justicar/Shaman/Warden. Can't wait. :p

I looks amazing, I'm willing to make a guild, but I'm really in tatters about waiting until march 1st, might go for DCuniverse if i'm not patient enough.

Tried the recent beta, seems like another WoW wannabe to me. Nothing new, original or exciting. I'll give it a miss :)

I'm struggling to decide on a class and soul combination for release.

Got my Paladin upto 29 and its an great tank but useless in PvP, which I expected need to try some more offensive souls.

Problem is I'm usually drawn to archers but there are so bloody many rogues running about might have to try a different option.

gutted the beta has finished :(

I tried so many different class builds throughout and think Ill just have to roll a Rogue a Cleric a Warrior and a Mage on full release !!!

My fave set of 'souls' came down to Bard + Ranger + Marksman of the Rogue path, I would just place all the points available into one of those soul trees. If I was in a group I would switch to my saved Bard setup for Buffage/Healing, and if we had a pure healing spec Cleric I would swap to my pure dedicated DPS build.

Have to say Rift is THE most polished and enjoyable beta I've had the pleasure of testing, they could release that client build immediately it was that stable. General exploring was great with some fantastically detailed landscape's and on top of that always knowing there was something to take part in be it 'Events', quests or PvP just made the experience marvelous.

want more... now !

Rift is nothing like EQ1. The two games are completely different. Do not expect a return to Norrath, Rift is not a sandbox mmo, much the opposite in fact - questing and a built in quest helper that shows you what to do and where to go plays a major part, you upgrade your loot constantly, you can't enter any buildings (expect for the 2 major cities in the game) because exploration isn't part of the design. You pretty much have 1 path to follow, there are only 2 starting areas with only 3 races per side. It's a very linear experience, though I believe it opens up a bit more at lvl 25+. I didn't get that far so I can't say.

Its' a very condensed and streamlined version of WoW. For many people, thats gonna work and work well. If you don't like WoW however, this is not the game for you. (There will be exeptions to that rule, but by and large it will be true for the majority of mmo players).

anyone wanting to pre-order this can grab the Digital Collectors Edition (normally £39.99) for £31.96 from D2D using the code 'Payday' with an offer they are running.. marvelous !!

I've been trying this out for last few days and have placed my order. I think it has some very nice features. I love the soul system, which gives you greater choice of abilities etc.

Have tried quite a few of the builds/classes, and they all seem to be very enjoyable, am having great difficulty picking one to focus on come release, but i expect it will be a warrior as that seems to be the class I've put most time into.

The Rift partying system is great fun, running around joining groups with little to no problems really works. There's no 'lfm healer/tank'. You can roll on up and join in.

Having played WoW since EU release, through all expansions and every tier, I'm now starting to get bored and was looking for something else to move onto. This seems to fit perfectly for me so far. Roll on Feb 4th for next beta.

One poster gets my hopes up with talk of similarities to EQ1, then another dashes them cruelly :p

Wonder if SOE will ever release a classic server...

grab a beta key, there's loads in this thread and try the game out for yourself Fox..

the problem with listening to other peoples view's is that they contain too much bias (good and bad)... make up your own mind !

* -“Planar War” event six: 2/4-2/7* -“Telara the Merciless” event seven: 2/15-2/22
you have two more beta event's before release :)
