Rift: Planes of Telera Beta

That's the first thing you've said that had some semblance of substance, and even then, you're wrong. Because Rift done it. Less races, less starting areas, more linearity, you can't enter any buildings, the capital cities are tiny compared to WoWs, the soul system is a convoluted take on WoWs talent trees (convoluted because theres so much cross over and little synergy between the souls) Trion ripped the rogue combo point combat from WoW, they even went as far as to rip the fatigued bar. Thats only the tip of the iceberg

You're trying to argue that Rift is more streamlined than WoW, then you say the Rift soul system is a convoluted take on WoW's talent trees. So, how is that more streamlined? :(

Also, you start listing ideas Rift has ripped from WoW... do you have any idea how many ideas WoW has ripped from other MMO's? All MMOs copy each other, that's how it works, that's how things improve.

I made two entirely seperate points. I don't see whats wrong with that? I listed reasons why Rift is more streamlined, then I went on to talk about the soul system. I didn't say the soul system was streamlined, just convoluted.

I started playing MMOs in 2000. I know how many ideas mmos take from one another and understand its part of the genre. But Rift goes way beyond just taking ideas. The most original thing about rift is its dynamic events and I give trion props for that. The rest of the game, from the soul system to the quests to the pvp is a straight up rip from wow. Even the crafting is the same, except you can slightly customise your gear. Gathering is the same. Warfronts = battlegrounds.

One or two things, maybe even 5 I can give a pass on. But Rift has feature after feature after feature thats been taken from WoW. Even Rifts achievements have a nod to WoW with its Nessingwary style big game hunter. The UI, very similar to WoW, right down to the crafting, mailbox and auction panels. It's a long list.

No, no you didn't...

How didn't I? I got to see 2 dungeons, both starting areas, 3 callings. Probably put in around 20+ hours, and got in some rift hunting too. I've seen enough to make as much of a judgement on the game as anyone. May not have played for as long as some of you but that doesn't make a difference, I saw enough to have a valid opinion.

caffrey u are under NDA on the alpha so watch wat you says, yes it runs better, less people hitting the servers

I know, I respect the NDA.

Server load doesn't affect FPS though. I still lagged with no people around in beta and the server load was huge there :p

Alpha runs like a dream but then I'm on nvidia :)

oh and the under the NDA you really shouldn't even say your in the Alpha but at this stage as long as nothing mayor leaks I shouldn't think they'll care much.

Why can't you understand that copying is a good thing. The reason WoW has survived and become so popular is because it is constantly searching for ideas from other MMOs, other games or any other form of inspiration. It takes those ideas and improves on them overtime, and that's exactly what a game like Rift will do.

Did you play Everquest? WoW was almost exactly the same game when it launched. Blizzard Producer J. Allan Brack even admitted that the entire foundation of WoW was taken from Everquest.

You mentioned achievements? WoW took the idea for achievements from WAR. They added a notification and points system similar to Xbox Live achievements and hey presto, WoW achievements.

The quest helper system was taken from LOTRO, where an area of the map was pin-pointed to show you where to go. The Guild leveling was taken from Everquest 2 and Lineage 2, in fact there were a few MMOs that already had this.

Shall I go on? The point is there's nothing wrong with copying. It's how a game evolves. Saying Rift rips everything from WoW is actually a good thing. It means its taking something that works, adding a bit and making it better.

I'm not discussing anymore on the matter. I've already spent a good deal of time forming my opinion. If you don't get it then there's no point arguing. If you don't like the game and you're not going to play it then why continue to post. Why not use the time and energy to talk about something you do like.

A question for those posting about the Alpha. What is the Alpha? :)

I thought Alpha testing came before Beta testing. So surely Alpha should have finished by now. Is it old or new code you're playing? I'll understand if you can't tell me, but was just interested to know what it was. :p

Do you think levels 1 - 20 and a couple of evenings play are representative of WoW game play, in particular end game as well?

Rift copies WoW no more than WoW copied Everquest or Battlefield copied Quake. It's a genre of gaming that has some fairly standard mechanics which are common to most games of the genre. Rift is built on the WAR engine and has taken a lot from Warhammer, WoW, Everquest GuildWars, DAoC and numerous other MMOs and combined them in much the same way WoW did when it released. If you follow your logic WoW is a direct copy of EQ taking almost every element of the game and adding cartoon graphics. You play fantasy characters and level up, learn new spells or abilities, group, do quests, some trade skills, have the ability to buy and sell virtual goods, have mobs that drop items, have items you collect to make up sets, can do PvP blah blah blah... All the same as EQ or others like Dark Age of Camelot.

Rift is a variation on a theme and refines some of the best of WoW and Warhammer in particular. For a beta is seemed pretty slick, stable and well thought out with a few new elements. How well it does remains to be seen and will in large part be depending on how many people who have only known WoW take to it. WoW keeps people coming back in large part because of the investment in time, players don't want to abandon characters they've spent 10s of hours a week building up over years. It's the "I've got this far I can't give up now or I've wasted all that time" mentality that of course Blizzard cultivates because it discourages people from moving to a different game.

I'll be having a play of Rift when it releases and as long as I get a couple of months play out of it I'll regard it as £30 well spent, it doesn't have to be some kind of life long commitment and loyalty thing...

I feel like I missed out on something everyone is saying Rift is good but I found it pretty dull

Dull as dishwater, I played it quite a bit in beta and it never gets better, its not a bad game just very very bland, and not even great looking.

I liked it for the first 10/15 days (the rifts were great) but its just becomes very very repetitive. as said before I have un-installed the game.
