Thank you Lloyds for my £75, you accepted my fine in style!

I call the law firm who inform me they will file a case against me by the close of business today if I don't pay up.

So, I had to pay £80 to this damn law firm to avoid getting a black mark on my credit file

You have been sucked in. You can't get a 'black mark' on your credit file for refusing to pay a fine like that. Even if the fine did exist it's not a credit default so has nothing to do with your credit file.
If people like you stop paying companies like this then they will go out of business immediately.

Hmm. The entire amount wasn't a fine. There was the original amount plus a late payment fee. They told me that it would adversely affect my credit profile.

If that's not the case then I have grounds for another gripe. Can you point me in the direction of some info?

Thanks :)

Plus, I know about the bank not signing any contract or anything to say that they will pay out if they make a mistake but it does happen, just ask the op :D ;)
By all means if you have been particularly inconvenienced by poor customer service draft a letter to head office and in many cases you will be able to expect a goodwill gesture — I have found this to be successful myself on a number of occasions where businesses have an incentive to retain me as a customer — but the notion of "fining" or "charging" a business you are in a contractual agreement with is utterly absurd.

By "fining" a business or "charging" them for your time, all you will do is come across as a total plonker while a customer service agent provides you with a standard goodwill gesture...

for me it was spending time in USA, i asked for some jeans, they spent ages looking out the back (not just standing out behind the door having a chat and returning saying "no sorry") they then called some other branches and had some dude drive down from another store with my size, they offered me a coffee while i waited! - it took about 45mins and was totally over the top... :D but that is service!
