Of course you are.

Overclocking will be limited by high voltages and stress-testing.

If you want your rig to simultaneously handle prime95+Furmark for an extended period of time, you must bear in mind that overvolting both GTX 480 and i7 9** results in much higher power consumption leading to stressing the PSU.

It won't fail but it is not advised to run any PSU that is supposed to last 2 years plus at its maximum rated spec.

That said there's absolutely nothing wrong with running an i7 with GTX 480 on Corsair HX520W.
 
Surely a 480 doesn't use more power than crossfired 5850s, which my HX520 handles without breaking a sweat?
 
The 3 x 12v rails are a real Achilles heel.

Ideally you need a dual or even better a very large single 12volt rail for a Fermi based card, especailly if your running an over clocked/volted quad core core rig.

The problem is if one rail is over used the system will crash even if the others are under zero load.


Everything considered I'm going to say that PSU is not up to running a high end rig with a GTX480.

The thing that confuses me is that everyone seems to think they are an expert on this subject, whereas the hugely conflicting advice in this thread quite clearly shows that some of these people do not have any idea. The issue for the rest of us is seperating those who DO know what they are talking about from those who do not.
 
I've got the HX520 and have ordered the 480 GTX.

I'll let you know my findings, although don't expect more than "Yeah it works :D" or "No, it doesn't :("

A 480 pull nowhere near that much. These later cards will pull around 230 watt whilst gaming.

Stay away from furmark with any high end card simple as....It's damaging and not representative of real world scenario.
 
Conclusion: A Corsair HX520 will power a GTX480 with no problems at all. It's more than sufficient for the job. Don't listen to people who say you will need a new PSU. That's absolute crap.

Why did you buy a tx650 then, when a hx 520 is more than you'll ever need? surely not to power your gtx 460, that takes less power than a gtx 480

this, and the fact a 650 gives more headroom for overclocking. covers me for upgrades in the future too.

it's already been covered in this thread that an hx520 covers all your cpu and gpu oc needs so why bother going for something bigger if you are just running one card
