*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

Placed my order last night, expecting delivery tomorrow.

In my haste I might have overlooked a few details, namely PSU.

Current rig (till GPU overheated) was 3.2ghz 6600, 9800gx2. Having read through the other thread regarding PSU's etc. Mine is 550w. Should be good?

Make and model of PSU?

I powered one of these off of a Corsair HX520W without issue for 6 months before upgrading my system. It is possible to run a GTX480 on a 600W / sub 600W PSU so long as it is a decent one.

I guess one way to look at it is why buy a 1000W PSU if your system will only pull 500W max? The other way is to look at it is how close to the redline do you like running? Many people here overclock their CPU's and Graphics to within a few percent of max stability (well behond specifications). What is the difference between that and pushing a CPU to ~80% of it's quoted and approved specification?

oooh - looking at THG I have been perusing the graphics card charts and it looks pretty good compared to my ancient 4870... which the noise bugs me but is bearable.

2d noise (presume this is doing normal stuff)- 39db for the 4870 vs 37.6
3d noise (on load I guess) - 47 for the 4870 vs 38

how can I go wrong? true ... these are reference but still should give a fair indication.

I guess if someone wants to run their PSU at it's peak efficiency.

can i ask, what does two of these do that one cant ?

is it just a few higher fps ?
SLI with these can get up to 93% scaling with a lot of modern games, so it's more than just a few more FPS - almost double in some cases. You'll need an SLI-capable motherboard, a beefy PSU, and a big enough case, though.

If you want to run nVidia Surround you'll need 2 cards, too. 3D Vision doesn't require 2 cards, but it'll help reduce the FPS loss from running in 3D. I'm running 2 460s at the moment, and 3D can drop performance down quite a bit - hence my upgrade to SLI 480s. I can probably sell my 460s as a bundle and recoup a fair bit of the cost.

38Db under load for the 480??!!

I don't think so!

I'm hoping isn't too noisy when gaming, but that figure is just silly.

THG also has it 53C under load.

Now, either all the reviews of the card and all the user reports I've read have been practical jokes to fool us into thinking the card is a bit noisy and hot, or... those figures from THG are just wrong!

Oh... ok then... :(

;)

Anyway, just got a note that mine has shipped (which is amazingly goood for what I thought was a "pre-order"!), so I can't now cancel even if everyone bombards this thread with posts saying "oh noes, what have I done! The heat! The noise!"

Be cool to check your vids of SLi, though to see how that noise adds up.

It would take about 50 years to recoup the costs of a new PSU based upon 2-3% efficiency savings. I doubt many people will be using ATX is 10 years, let alone 50.
Awww damn, knew I should have bought a 350W PSU and ran it at full load. :(
