Hi all,

So I made my first build last week - went 100% fine :) and everything was fully working - have used it for about a week now with no probz.

Now when i made the build I accidently ordered 2x2GB ram instead of 2x4gb ram. I thought it didnt matter, continued with the build with sets of 2 and ordered a set of 4 from ocuk.

Today, I installed the set of 2x4gb ram. As soon as it installed the computer wouldnt boot - instead i get continuous beeps (long short short) and a red light on in the motherboard. The computer wont boot at all, all i get is the beeps and lights, nothing on the monitor.

I swapped the RAM out for the old ram incase it was a problem with the RAM - same result. Now whichever RAM i try i get the same result. Have double checked they are sitting correctly inside, was very gentle putting them in etc etc. Also tried combinations of slots 1-3 & 2-4.

I do not know what is wrong, spent a hell of a lot of money for me on my first build and am really paniking!!

Thanks in advance for your time, any solutions would be MASSIVLEY appriciated!

Im using an ASUS 890GX motherboard and Geil 2x4GB RAM

Can you still get in to the BIOS?

Might just be wrong settings for the ram, If you cant get in to the BIOS then try clearing the cmos (your motherboard manual will tell you how to do this).

It seems unlikely, but is it possible you have been too gentle putting them in? You sometimes do need a reasonable amount of force to get the modules in properly.

Failing that do as much of a BIOS reset as you can - by jumper/button and if need be by taking the battery out.

And if that doesn't work try with just one module and try all positions it could go in.

You do seem to have done most of that already... and if you've done that you've probably done the CMOS reset too....

Take the little watch battery out of the motherboard aswel as the RAM... wait around 15 minutes, have a coffee.

Come back and only put in one memory module in slot 1, closest to the processor. Connect the battery back in.

Turn it on and let us know what you get?

That's the chipset you have listed not the exact model. I presume you didn't get it from OCUK as the only board they seem to sell with that chipset is a Gigabyte. What's the actual model number of the motherboard?

Thanks for input all - so far no joy. Iv applied a little more pressure to make sure the chips are sitting properly in the mobo - they are, clips are clicking into place automatically and wont come out without being unlocked. Iv resetted the cmos so far without any luck.

Iv had a look at the mobo manual. The light on is the "memory ok" switch, said it comes on if the ram is incompatible, hold the button and let it run different settings, which iv done and still no luck. Also trying with the original ram which i know is compatible coz it was working for a week with it. Really at a loss, most iv ever spent on a pc and it was a point of pride for me (for a week anyway)

Not taken out the battery yet, gonna do that now and a coffee sounds like a bloody good idea!

Oh and sorry, the mobo is a Asus M4A89GTD...which i did outsource, not fro ocuk.....clearly a dumb idea!!!

Thanks everyone for input please keep it coming, cant actually believe how much a computer has the ability to make me stress :p

Taken straight from the mobo manual itself. "One continuous beep followed by two short beeps then a pause (repeated)" = No memory detected

Does that sound familiar to what you are getting? You did mention in the original post, it was, long-short-short

So it looks like the system isn't picking up the RAM at all. Have you made sure not to touch the gold connectors on the RAM? Have you tried just one module in DIMM 1?

Yup - exactly what m getting....couldnt find that in the mobo book though? Iv made sure im only touching on the sides of the ram chips, no contact with the connectors. Coffees just finished now so gonna give it another try with just the one ram chip, try it in each slot then try again with the other chips if it dont work....wish me luck :(

Try all modules one at a time in DIMM1 closest to the CPU. Good luck, I'm off to watch corrie at half 8... I'll be back at 9 to see how you're getting on and see if I can help you some more :)

No luck :(

Ok to recap:
- mobo is not accepting any ram. Red light and one long beep followed by two short ones, either because the mono thinks no ram is in or that it's incompatible.

- iv put all ram in carefully, gently but firmly, made sure it's in properly.
- tried all ram chips in all slots
- reset CMOS, thru the mobo and by removing battery
- used the 'memory ok' button to 'reconfigure' memory, with each ram in each slot

Im honestly at a loss mate. Gonna ring a few support lines tomorrow but not sure how much theyl b able to help.
Do you have any suggestions? If it comes to make a return would it be the mobo? If so would it be to asus or the retailer?

Cheers for ur time. I have no idea what to do atm

This might be a long shot, but are all the stand off's in the right place?

If one was in the wrong place then by swapping the ram over you might have pushed the board down on to it and shorted something.

You seem to have covered everything I can think of. I'm clutching at straws when I say all ram in all slots.. you have tried a single stick I assume?

Short of borrowing some RAM from someone nearby... I don't know if that's an option... I can't think of anything else. But if the old RAM which did work doesn't work and the new RAM doesn't work then I'd guess motherboard fault... but really I don't think it's possible to tell from here.

Yup - iv double checked every connection in the pc. After ur post I double checked the stand offs, they seem fine.

When looking online iv found someone on yahoo answers who had exactly the same problem after testing some ram for a friend...but question remained pretty much unresolved :s

Try disconnecting all other devices, HDD, DVD, PCI expansion cards... remove or disconnect everything except the ram and cpu.

This will eliminate everything else... although the beep codes point towards the ram it may not be the case.

So just to summarise... make sure nothing is connected except the mobo, ram and cpu... obviously power to these.

Again try with just one stick on ram in dimm 1.

Is there any way you could also post a photo of the internals of the case.

Short of that try taking the motherboard out and running it outside of the case..

Clutching at straws here though.... Buchannan is right though about disconnecting things. PATA drives used to prevent POST, and I've even had it with SATA drives too.

Genuinely guys ur help is greatly appreciated.

Iv taken the steps u recommended Buchanan - no luck so far. Everything was disconnected short of power, cpu and ram....no luck, same beeps and light and no boot up whatsoever. Im calling it a night for tonite i think, this has completely worn me out.

Gonna give a ring to a few support lines and the retailer tmrw see if i can return the mobo....just hope they dont try pin on it me when i know i took EVERY care in all handling!

Il post pics for u guys tommorow if i have no joy with technical support.

Many thanks to everyone who has read & posted

I personally wouldn't bother spending £20 on a phone call to India. By all means give Ocuk a ring, see what they say about it.

Be good to see the pics :)

Definitely no other RAM you can borrow from a friend to try?

Did you unplug the psu, and press the case power on button to lose any current. Then reset CMOS, remove battery.

Edit, It used to always take me 2 goes to get ram in cos i was too scared to push hard.

Another longshot,
Have you tryed a airgun / compressed air thingy
into the ram slots
to blow out and dust or dirt that could have got into ti
