I'll describe the problem in as much detail as I can. Please request any information you might need to help me solve it.

First of all, here's what I have:

  • HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 640 3.00GHz (Socket AM3)
  • Asus M4A78LT-M 760G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
  • OcUK Crusade 550W Dual-Rail High Efficiency Power Supply
  • GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz VALUE PLUS Dual Channel
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS)

Now to the issue:

It took a little while to install everything, but I finally got all the pieces together, connected a screen and tried powering it up. My PC starts whirring and the LED on the motherboard is lit up, but unfortunately there is nothing on my screen - "No signal". All fans are working properly it seems - CPU cooler, PSU and GPU. They do sound a little strange however - like the system is restarting itself every second - fan speed goes up and down.

I've tried removing the graphics card and plugging my monitor into the motherboard, but no luck there. Also tried moving the RAM around, using one stick, making sure they're properly fitted and things like that. As a last note I'm using a screen which only has a VGA connector, so I'm using a VGA to DVI adapter if that matters.

If there is anything you think I could try to get it working I would be very happy. Starting to ship things back to the UK is a big hassle and will probably cost me a lot of time and money.

Edit: One thing I noticed during my endless googling about my problem, is that my motherboard only has a 4 pin atx12v connector. Could this cause my problem? Is my CPU getting enough power? I am not very exprienced and I have no idea. Just thought I'd add it.

So it's not booting at all...

Edit:Just seen you've got a low quality PSU brand.... one thing with building a rig is to NEVER skimp on PSU... I'm not 100% sure on the efficiency of OCuk power supplies, but I'd have definitely gone for a 550w + corsair or OCZ..... That could well be your problem.

Yes this was one of the first things that came to mind. But well.. It's not the absolutely cheapest.

I have an old 350w PSU that I could try. Do you think that would give enough power if I didn't connect the graphics card?

If i was you i wouldnt run that system on a 350w PSU for too long, id get a decent brand PSU around 550w... just thinking ath system would draw maybe close to or more than 350w

Yeah I think I'll wait until I get a new one to plug in my graphics card. Do you think that would be enough?

I would return the OcUK PSU. You shouldn't be using such a cheap PSU in your computer. I would buy a high quality PSU such as the Corsair TX650W. Also, I would not use that 350W PSU with your computer. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Don't skimp on the PSU!

One last question:

Do you think the fact that the 550W PSU has 2x2 atx12v instead of a 4 pin could be causing the problem with it? Could this be fixed if it is? As it is I have to connect two cables (2x2) instead of 1 (1x4).

That shouldnt really be a problem TBH, dont turn that system on even without the GPU without a decent PSU at around 500w atleast i reckon
