Was around the 90s when someone was stabbed to death in Wigan town centre, an Asian bloke with mental problems stab his mother and sister to death about 5 mins from my house about 3 years ago. Scary stuff.

You guys have to remember not all teenagers are gang influenced. Most of the people I know (including myself) want to finish university and get the hell out of the **** hole which they are living in.
 
As long as these gang thugs stab and kill each other i dont really care, less scum on the streets, tho we dont have this problem down here, thank god!
 
What can you do? the real criminals, who glamorise this are earning a fortune calling themselves "artists" and "rappers". They also claim to produce something they call "music"

Its unfortunate that knuckle draggers hold them in some kind of high esteem and the human rights legislation helps them evade any real punishment. Prison is a soft option.
 
On the positive side perhaps Boris can get them to incorporate Stabbing into the 2012 London Olympics, they already have Fencing right? Think of it as Mini-Fencing and instead of using Rapier Style they could use Rapper Style and stuff, at least we'd have a good chance of winning Gold at something.
 
I grew up not 100m from there, my nan lived on the estate across from dog kennel hill.

TBH i cant contribute anything meaningful but these kids need some serious help and guidance. I don't think there is a deterrent strong enough to stop them either.

Really what can you do ?? Bring back capital punishment in inner London schools?

When they're cackling like animals and egged on by their friends, this is exactly what you get.

These kids aren't brought up to appreciate or respect the sanctity of human life or our bodies. They simply don't understand that it isn't right to completely decimate someone in any way, shape or form.

Think about it -- you're forced to stab someone. I guarantee that after the first or second entry, you'll feel like throwing up simply at the feeling of it. They don't understand that. They don't have that.

And that is a major problem.

I suppose you've never watched a movie which glamorised shooting people or blowing stuff up. Are you saying they should be banned?

When they are 12% (roughly 6% if you only count men) of the london population and do 50% of the stabbings it's quite easy to generilse.

Imagine if everyone had to carry stabber insurance like car insurance, you know in case they ever stabbed someone. How would the actuaries calculate the rates for black men? Do you think their rates would be a little higher than everyone else? 6% of population doing 50% of stabbings?

If we knew the rate of black-on-black stabbings I think the probability would be much higher even.

That's a relatively weak argument, though. Not many films display such within the context of a generic urban atmosphere.

A lot of gangster rap, however, is centrally based in themes of street based gang warfare, drug dealing, and money-making through low-level criminality. Hell, it's even bolstered in most grime music videos.

While it's certainly difficult to really accept, I do think there's a strong correlation between that type of music, and teens of a less stable background engaging in violent crime. I live in a crime ridden area, and I can tell you unreservedly that every single major troublemaker, burglar and sheer teenage thug around here swaggers to those tunes. If more rappers aspired to a positive message, there may be a difference.

On the other hand, you'll probably find that those who DO attempt to bolster positivity in their listeners are largely ignored in favour of those who offer a false sense of bravado through their lyrics, which these young people devoid of aspiration cling to.

Meh. I'd argue that people in those situations listen to music that resembles their situations, but it's a question of whether art imitates life or vice versa.

Either way, I've listened to loads of Jay Z and have yet to attempt to deal crack.
