anyone going travelling this year?

Just found the receipt in my "box of random things from overseas that I don't know what to do with", was £418 - 6 month open return from Heathrow to Bangkok, booked via STA. Never actually used the return bit, as I ended up flying back from Shanghai instead, but seems about right to me.

I should point out though, I spoke to a friend a few days ago who just got back from that region - compared a few places where we stayed, and the prices have rocketed in some areas, even for the cheap hostels. It's a relative increase of course, and still cheap on the whole, but looking at $4 increasing to $10 for a night in some places, so not quite so cheap any more.

Been to the many parts of Scotland this year already, as far south as Ayr, as far north as Peterhead. This weekend takes me to Buckie in the north. Well its not really a proper traveling response, just all the places I've seen my footy team go to this season :D

I spent just over £3k in total for 5 months round SE Asia, not working along the way, and that included a few last minute unexpected flights around the region. Was most definitely roughing it, but never felt there was something I couldn't afford to do had I wanted to.

As of a year ago £200 a week was easy enough per week in SE Asia , having a few beers most nights stopping in fan rooms no AC:(.

anyone thinking of travelling do it, best 18months of life . Just wish I could turn back the clock and do it all again with my soon to be wife

Did you go on your own when you did it or were you with a group?

doesn't matter really. the difference between a holiday and travelling is a personal one. to me, a holiday is 2 or 3 weeks in a hotel resort or villa, travelling is multiple stop overs and roughing it for the most part in hostels or other budget accomodation. i just don't know if i can do it with a mortgage.

Fair enough.

In that case I'm going back to the USA this year for some more road trips - this time Florida, Atlanta, Washington DC and New York City over just under 3 weeks. Technically a holiday though I never stay in the same place more than 3 nights :)

How did you get the cash together to do that at 19?!

I did 6 weeks in Australia and it cost me £3k and that was at $2:£1 let alone now!

looking at the places I have seen you stay 20k is not bad at all for all that, well assuming it includes spends

Yes that is everything all in however I did not have to pay for hotels in Toronto and most of India as we have family homes there. We only had to stay in hotels form 23.12.10. to 04.02.11 but I did a lot of shopping around to get the best rates which helped keep the costs down quite a lot. Considering we only stayed in 5 star hotels (except Dubai) I think we did quite well overall.

I was very shocked at how expensive Hong Kong was!!! A meal for 2 costs 60 pounds in a very average restaurant.
