Hi all

I just got a 3 monitor setup using windows 7 64bit and have a small problem, I have an ATI HD sapphire 5770 GFX card installed and using drivers 12.1. I have 2 monitors using dvi and 1 monitor+sapphire active dvi to displayport adaptor using a displayport, My desktop is not set to eyefinity but as 3 monitors using an extension to the desktop and have the centre monitor as the primary.

The problem is when playing videos on my desktop or any youtube videos using IE, the monitors that use DVI conections both flicker or tear the screen for a split second when loading a video up or closing it down using windows media player and the same goes for youtube in IE for a short burst but the monitor connected using the displayport does not have this effect at all its 100% fine only the 2 monitors connected using the DVI has this problem.
The videos plays fine stright after that with no problems at all its only when first loading or playing the video this happens and also when watching youtube videos in ie when the video first plays and when you shut ie down or use the back button to stop the video that it happens but the videos play fine

Now for the strange part If i open a video using windows media player it flickers or tears the desktop as it normaly does but if i leave it open on any monitor and pause the video and then open ie and go to youtube it does not flicker or tear the same if i open a 2nd video using windows media player and play the video. so it stops this problem if you have 2 videos up on the desktop but if you only have one it happens. I have also tried VLC player and XBMC and it does not do it at all even with 1 video loaded up.

i can not understand why this is happaning do you think its a driver problem i am on 12.1

has anyone herd or know what this problem is.

Does anyone know if its a driver problem and if you can downgrade the driver by just installing it over the newer versions of the driver and if so what is the most stable driver you think is best to use ? as i dont know if this is a driver problem.

thanks

I get the same flickering of the screen when running a flash video here on a single monitor using the 11.1a hotfix drivers.

You could try disabling flash hardware acceleration & see if that stops it ?

I can't because the flash prefs panel is unclickable here ( I can use tab to go through the different sections, but can't disable hw acceleration...)

is youtube a flash video ? not only that i get this using just windows media media player

The 'monitor+sapphire active dvi to displayport adaptor using a displayport' could be giving you issues with powerplay, when it kick's in, your idle clocks may be to low, you could try this:http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=117633
If it solves your problem, then you could try editing your bios with RBE so you don't have to use profiles.

i will give it ago, do ati not know about this i would have thought they would fix it as the whole point in ati is to have eyefinity or a 3 monitor setup.

is there older drivers out there that stops this at all ?

I also have overdrive disabled as i never game it is set at
GPU-860mhz memory 1200mhz
default clock 850mhz memory 1200mhz
GPU core clock 400mhz
memory clcok 1200mhz

also just tested some Standard Def 576i/480 videos and i dont get any problems at all it just seems to be hi-def or youtube videos i have this slight jump/flicker problem

cheers

what is the most stable driver to use anyway ?

cheers

ok just done a littile test i had the overdrive window up but disabled.

no video playing GPU 400mhz, mem clock 1200mhz but when i play a video or youtube it jumps to GPU 400mhz, mem clcok 900mhz and when i stop the video it goes back to Mem Clock 1200mhz.

when the mem clcok changes it seems to casue the flicker or tear on the desktop screen on videos.

is there a fix for this better drivers ?

cheers

dont understand ? how can you have 10.12 drivers on and 10.0a ?

and is it best to uninstall them first ? or just go over the top

can you go back to old driver by putting them over the top ?

basically i installed 10.4a drivers and then installed 10.12's over the top but selected custom and unticked the driver package. so getting bennefit of the best drivers around with the new CCC ect that comes with 10.12's

been reading on other forums that this does not seem to be a fix for this using a driver more a bios workround thing.

a lot of people seem to get this problem on a 3 monitor setup and the only way to fix it is to edit the bios so that the mem clocks always stay at 1200mhz.

I have tried turning on the overdrive and i could not even use it as the clocks would drop down to mem 300mhz and the whole desktop would keep tearing without even doing anything so i had to turn it off to get it back to 1200mhz to keep it stable, but like i say playing video makes the mem clcoks drop to 900mhz and it tears for a split 2nd.

need to find out how to do this bios fix to see if it will sort it out.

i have even tried the profile manager by doing what the link above said and try and have the clcok set at 1200mhz but it still drops back to 900mhz when playing video

I'm running a 5970 and the only drivers to give me any level of consistant, reliable performance and stability have been 10.4a, 10.5 and 10.10e.

11.1(a) are shocking on my system although to be fair I guess AMD are focussing the drivers on getting hte most out of the 6XXX series now so i'm pretty much resigned to 10.10e being the last set of drivers for me.

Tbh, I think that's probably right. Certain things in 10.10e, promised, still haven't made it into an official release for months. Mlaa on 5 series cards for example. Instead amd has taken to "tweaking" settings specific to games so that they produce results similar to nvidias cards in benches. It back-fired on nivida all those years ago and will do so for amd, but it's about short term sales sadly.

It's no secret amds driver team is smaller than nividas, but it's standards also seem to be lower too.

thanks for the help but waht a pain in the bum, i mean a lot of people fork out a lot of money for a 3 monitor setup and to have this sort of problem is not on.

i am lucky in a way as its not to much of a major problem but for some its even worse but thats not the point you should not get any flicker problem when the memory clock changes from 1200mhz to 900mhz and back.

the strange thing is that it only happens on the 2 dvi connected monitors but not the displyport monitor which will get the same settigns as the other 2 monitors so it must be a bug in the dvi side of it.

J.D. put a guide for doing the voltages, but it will give you an idea of what to expect with RBE. You would just need to change all the ram settings and it would be a temporary fix for you, better than nothing though.

thanks for that will take a look

the problem is with mine is the mem clcok is set to 1200mhz which the best it can do but when i play video it drops to 900mhz on gfx accel. i dont realy want to mess with voltages but if i could make the card stop on 1200mhz all the time so it would not drop that would fix my problem

I have the same problem with my 5770 and have researched into this a few months ago.

It only affects people with more than one monitor, and every screen except the primary one will flicker, regardless of the connection. This is caused by when something accesses the card's UVD. I read on the official AMD forums somewhere that AMD did this to "prevent the card from crashing" when the UVD is in use, and they don't plan to fix this as far as I know. It's annoying when I'm playing a game and watching youtube at the same time, forcing the clocks to go down to UVD settings... Disabling the hardware acceleration does work though as it uses software decoding instead of the UVD.
