Hi guys, Im seriously thinking about giving up smoking, last time I tried was about 2 months ago, tried everything patches, inhalor, gum etc. I think with me it's more mental, just have to break the cycle and be in the right frame of mind to do so, would love to know of any tips from ex-smokers who have kicked the evil stuff.

Cheers guys.

Have you tried going to a stop smoking clinic. Having to go back every fortnight for more patches made it a lot easier. They track your progress and makes the time fly quicker. I quit 4-5 years ago with no desire to even start again,
Plus, you might have better luck with the tablets.

Thanks, really helpful.

but it really is that simple though. Its all willpower. Just go cold turkey and if you make it past 3 days, you're on your way.

I helped both my parents quit and it was a scary time but when you get past a certain amount of time, it gets easier.

Start a hobby that requires a lot of hand work. Knitting? Painting? building models? Do more house work. Just keep busy. Thats how my parents quit.

As crude as it sounds, that's exactly what you got to do. When you get the urge, fight it for 30 minutes and then it's gone.

Wait for the next one a few hours later, fight it for 30 minutes, rinse and repeat.

The longer you stay off them, the longer apart the cravings will be.

Eventually you will get to the stage where you only get a craving once every week, or when you drink/socialise.

Eventually you will only get a craving once or twice a year.

I found drinking water when I had a craving sometimes helped.

Bottom line is every craving only lasts 30 mins max, ride it out like a man.

i have to agree

to stop smoking, stop smoking

whatever else you want to try , patches, pills, hypnosis, blah blah

it comes down to a simple fact, that you have to just stop

take it one day at a time, reward yourself and be strong

I am 3 weeks in and this is the 3rd time I have quit, I quit for 2 years last time and its as simple as just not smoking. If you really want to quit just stop and take each day as it comes.

At work I just read at tea break instead of smoking.

As soon as you feel the need for a cigarette go for a long shower.

If you're at work and need one, lock yourself in a supply closet.

Can i give some genuine advice?

Quit on a monday.

Change your routine.

Every time you have a craving take a few large deep breaths.

Dont ever believe that you are quiting forever.

These are the rules I followed. I had tried the gum (tasted like poo), I tried the losengers (gave me a sore throat), the patches gave me the strangest dreams I have ever had, including being on something illegal.

However, the number one rule is that you have to want to quit.
