Anybody know the book time to change a clutch?

Bought an almera off kieran on here for £200 and it's been cool until now.

A rattle started not too long ago that happened in gear/neutral with the clutch out but was silent with the clutch in. I assumed input shaft bearing and have kept driving it.

Now the clutch is slipping and I can get all but 4th gear.

Clutch kit is ~£50 online and I'm struggling to find a box.

How much is it likely to cost for a clutch change and how much extra would it cost to get the box changed at the same time?

I've got ramps so was contemplating doing the clutch myself but the input shaft bearing being shagged will cause it to wear out faster than usual?

The input shaft shouldn't be fubared, I wouldn't worry about that.

It does sound to me like the clutch is well dead and the 'thrust bearing' is broken. Just buy a clutch kit and DIY it yourself.

Provided you've got a weekend free, I did my 306 2.0 HDi engine over the course of a weekend. But that has a longer book time than yours, and I had various sessions of swearing then leaving it alone for a while :p

There's a place around here that were giving me quotes of £140 labour on an e36. Thought it wasn't a bad price at all.

Car ramps would be no good for this job, if your doing it on the floor so to speak you would need axle stands. The car wheels need to be removed to remove the driveshaft, even if the wheels dont need to be moved you need them to be in a moveable position.

Kieran has axle stands so they will be used.

The box was working fine albeit a bit loud but all gears were usable until the clutch was slipping.

Sounds like fun anyway.

So we did get it done today eventually. Drove ~25 miles with it slipping and spent 6-7? hours doing it.

Was fairly smooth but tricky to line it all up due to the weight/space.

The input shaft had quite a lot of movement on it though and is still making the rattle, might need to fix that in the near future!

So a whole day and the car on ramps should do the trick lol.

Think I'll attempt it myself once I can afford the clutch kit.

Did the Mustangs clutch in a day and thats a job I'd never do again and there was two of us, that gearbox was damn heavy, not that easy to bench press, certainly not a job that should be done without proper 4 poster lift as you just run out of space and energy trying to wrestle with such heavy things.

Should have carried on reading, glad you got it done, I'd say we spent a good 10hrs, a good part of which was spent trying to line things up and swearing. All I will say is Americans use damn huge gearboxes. :D

Aye it was the alligning it back up that was tricky with us. Wriggle and push for ages then it just sort of clunked into place.

I imagine the gearbox and clutch for a mustang are quite a bit bigger than a wee almera :P

The sound happens when the clutch is out but when you press the pedal it goes quiet.

From what I read that would be the opposite of the CRB.

That sounds like thrust bearings to me.

Normally in the crankcase installed with the crank. Sometimes elsewhere if your lucky. It's to take the engaging thrust impact.
