I'd honestly rather have the Polo GTI.
If I saw a Polo GTI I'd probably be intrigued and want to have a look at it. A bog standard Scirocco 1.4 TSI (especially a poverty-spec 120bhp one without the essential options) on the other hand would not draw the same interest.
I guess I'd rather have 'the best' of a model as opposed to the cheapest, budget option of a model, which is essentially what we have here.
Agree with you totally, I too would prefer a top spec of a certain model than a lower spec of another.

The Scirocco is a car from the class above and this shows with the interior and the build quality/quality of materials used. The fact it isn't the 'top model' matters to nobody apart from a few people on the internet. We are talking about VW hatchbacks here not the latest Audi.
The Scirocco is just a better car - hardly suprising given its higher position within the VW model range.
My opinion is the complete opposite to scott212. I wouldnt look twice at a Polo GTI, I simply couldnt care less, it is a VW Polo, my interest ends there, a Polo is the sort of car my girlfriends parents nearly bought to go shopping in. Yet when a Scirocco drives past I've no idea whether its a TDI or a TSI or a 2.0T or what, they all look the same and they all look good.
Have you definitely ruled out a 2.0TSI Scirocco then Nath? As said, to get it for the same price as the 1.4TSI you'd have to go a bit older but then you're hardly going to get anywhere near a shed of a 2.0TSI for the same price as a new 1.4TSI (i'm assuming you were looking at new cars).
I mean yes, the 1.4TSI tunes to the level of the 2.0TSI but then the larger engine tunes again higher.![]()
Tbh yes as it will take the price well over 20k and anything under that will probably be very "used".
i'd definately plump for the GT over the R. Especially if he thinks he'll be content with the 1.4 TSI.
My mate has a brand new Fabia VRS, got it literally last week and has had it on order for months. It doesnt really pull that hard, and as evo says the exhaust note is very plain. The gearbox is superb, and its crying out for a powerful engine to really take use of it.
but a 2nd hand 2.0 GTI with a remap would the be same price as the 1.4 but even faster still.
Revo will take the 2.0 TFSI engine to 300bhp with a remap.
But surely that's the beauty of combining the supercharger with the turbocharger - you've got power across the whole range, not just a sudden surge in a small rev band and dead at low revs. It won't "feel" as quick, but in the real world it will be much better as you've always got instant power. All too often in a turbo car you can get caught off boost and are a sitting duck.
People saying get an early 2009 Scirocco...bear in mind that from week 22 2009 onwards, they re-vamped it for the 2010 model, to include the basis of the interior from the MkVI Golf, which means the MkVI steering wheel, instrument cluster (white lighting), and climate control knobs.
The link posted by Tute above shows the old version for example. I'd be reluctant to buy a Scirocco now and it have the cluster and wheel from a model brought out almost 8 years ago.

If it was the choice between the 2009 2.0 and the 2010 1.4, I'd go the latter if I thought the 1.4 160 would be sufficient.
Correction: only the 'R' has the MkVI climate control switchgear, but the rest all have the updated steering wheel and cluster.
biggest difference there is the steering wheel, which no doubt you can swapped over for a newer version.
