I'd honestly rather have the Polo GTI.

If I saw a Polo GTI I'd probably be intrigued and want to have a look at it. A bog standard Scirocco 1.4 TSI (especially a poverty-spec 120bhp one without the essential options) on the other hand would not draw the same interest.

I guess I'd rather have 'the best' of a model as opposed to the cheapest, budget option of a model, which is essentially what we have here.

Agree with you totally, I too would prefer a top spec of a certain model than a lower spec of another.

Not seen any remaps for the GTI yet probably because it is so new. But my vague maths tells me you would be looking at 210-220ps?

It's a tricky decision. As mentioned earlier there are some fairly "meh" reviews about the GTI whereas the scirocco gets raved about. The polo gets a lot of flak for a rather stiff chassis, whereas the scirocco Is deemed as abit more chuckable.

Problem is that I would want a car with power but no handling when a could get a slightly less powerful car with better handling.

This is a really daft way to buy a car though. Logic dictates that the middle of a higher range of car is a better place to be than the top of a lower range of car surely?

The Scirocco is a car from the class above and this shows with the interior and the build quality/quality of materials used. The fact it isn't the 'top model' matters to nobody apart from a few people on the internet. We are talking about VW hatchbacks here not the latest Audi.

The Scirocco is just a better car - hardly suprising given its higher position within the VW model range.

My opinion is the complete opposite to scott212. I wouldnt look twice at a Polo GTI, I simply couldnt care less, it is a VW Polo, my interest ends there, a Polo is the sort of car my girlfriends parents nearly bought to go shopping in. Yet when a Scirocco drives past I've no idea whether its a TDI or a TSI or a 2.0T or what, they all look the same and they all look good.

Point taken. I get both sides really.

You can have the GTI which is top spec of it's range but when said and done it is just a Polo.

Or you can have the 1.4 Scirocco which whilst isn't top of it's range but is still a sirocco which ultimately is a better overall than a polo regardless of the polos spec.

So really I do agree with you :p I just understand the logic ( if any!?) of the ther side.

Have you definitely ruled out a 2.0TSI Scirocco then Nath? As said, to get it for the same price as the 1.4TSI you'd have to go a bit older but then you're hardly going to get anywhere near a shed of a 2.0TSI for the same price as a new 1.4TSI (i'm assuming you were looking at new cars).

I mean yes, the 1.4TSI tunes to the level of the 2.0TSI but then the larger engine tunes again higher. :)

Tbh yes as it will take the price well over 20k and anything under that will probably be very "used".

I think a 1.4 sircocco with a remap a few months down the line would be a good choice in fairness. I'm just getting the feeling that the scirocco is the superior car overall.

edit: I just saw this on auto trader http://http//www.autotrader.co.uk/c.../postcode/st73px/radius/1500/page/1?logcode=p ooooooo

This is where you want to be looking !

It will still have at least 6 months of manufacturer warranty on, and will probably have 12 months dealer warranty on it being from a VW dealer. Racking up 43,000 miles in just over 2 years means they will likely have been easy ones too. You dont do 20k a year going to and from the shops. And anyway, who cares when its got 12 months warrany on it and all the assurance of buying from a VW dealer ? No waiting list either ... which a brand new car will.

I'd get the Scirocco, simply because it looks better imo and because I prefer a manual, I have a feeling that because it's a bit larger the ride quality/comfort will be higher too.

i'd definately plump for the GT over the R. Especially if he thinks he'll be content with the 1.4 TSI.

My mate has a brand new Fabia VRS, got it literally last week and has had it on order for months. It doesnt really pull that hard, and as evo says the exhaust note is very plain. The gearbox is superb, and its crying out for a powerful engine to really take use of it.

But surely that's the beauty of combining the supercharger with the turbocharger - you've got power across the whole range, not just a sudden surge in a small rev band and dead at low revs. It won't "feel" as quick, but in the real world it will be much better as you've always got instant power. All too often in a turbo car you can get caught off boost and are a sitting duck.

People saying get an early 2009 Scirocco...bear in mind that from week 22 2009 onwards, they re-vamped it for the 2010 model, to include the basis of the interior from the MkVI Golf, which means the MkVI steering wheel, instrument cluster (white lighting), and climate control knobs.

The link posted by Tute above shows the old version for example. I'd be reluctant to buy a Scirocco now and it have the cluster and wheel from a model brought out almost 8 years ago.

If it was the choice between the 2009 2.0 and the 2010 1.4, I'd go the latter if I thought the 1.4 160 would be sufficient.

Correction: only the 'R' has the MkVI climate control switchgear, but the rest all have the updated steering wheel and cluster.
Correction of the correction, courtesy of unclelonghair! The latest version does indeed have the MkVI Golf's climate control switchgear.

but a 2nd hand 2.0 GTI with a remap would the be same price as the 1.4 but even faster still.

Revo will take the 2.0 TFSI engine to 300bhp with a remap.

If you mean the 2.0TFSI unit in the Edition 30 / Pirelli then yes 300BHP with just a remap is possible (Same as with my Cupra).

The "standard" GTI 2.0TFSI will only see ~ 255BHP from just a remap.

Back to the op:

If the choice has to be between those two cars they the Sirocco wins. The Polo GTI whilst not a bad car is around 5k overpriced. The Fabia vRS is currently available VAT free for around 13.5k making a 19k Polo seem very expensive indeed.

TBH though I am with Fox an others on this, a used 2.0 TSI Sirocco would be where I would start looking. (Although for me I would look at a used S3 at this price range).

and in the real world it still only does 0-60 in barely under 7 seconds.

It doesnt feel fast, and to top it off the numbers arent actually that fast either.

biggest difference there is the steering wheel, which no doubt you can swapped over for a newer version.

There's that and the white colour to the instrument cluster, along with:

– Coat hook moved from headlining to B pillar
– DAB radio aerial moved from roof to side window
– Bi-xenon headlights £860
– Winter pack with bi-xenon headlights £305
– Winter pack with bi-xenon headlights and leather upholstery £200
– Digital oil temperature indicator with highline computer

I agree that the difference isn't exactly massive, just a heads up, in case he's the type to be annoyed by spending £20k on a car then finding out it was revised the following year ;).
