It's a shame that they have been bred with spina bifida to give that ridge though; breeders have been known to put down dogs without the ridge ie perfectly healthy animals, in favour of keeping the diseased ones.

The owner of my Dads local boozer is South African.

He has got two Ridgebacks. The older one is called Kruger and I forget what the pup is called.

Anyway, they got the pup in early December and when I first saw it, it was this wonderful little playful thing which just wanted to gum your hand.

I went in there a couple of weeks back and what I though was Kruger bounded out of the back. Well it was not Kruga, it was the pup.

My god how big he has got in two months! Must have weighed 3 / 4 stone at least. You would not want to pick him up.

Lovely mentality though. Very clever and playful. I would certainly look to get one if I ever want a big dog.

my ridgeback is crossed with a bull mastiff ,can be a handfull at times but a teddy bear tbh . here with my other half

What a ridiculous thing to say. The majority of male dogs will fight another dog if he feels threatened on his territory. Never once has he shown any other form of aggression to anything. The most gentle soppy dog you can meet.

Yes, it was stupid of me to open the door but a) i didnt realise my dog was there, and b) i was pretty ****ing scared of the huge staff right in front of me without an owner.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback's distinguishing feature is the ridge of hair along its back, running in the opposite direction to the rest of its coat. It consists of a fan-like area formed by two whorls of hair (called "crowns") and tapers from immediately behind the shoulders down to the level of the hips.

I think you're lucky the Staffy weren't game or it would have gone on longer & got messy, Dogs seem to know when they are going to get beat & the Staffy Thankfully legged it. One of the sounds i cannot stand is the sound of dogs fighting it goes straight to the core of me, I Hate it.

Glad it all worked out well though & well done for getting your dog back before it started again.

Don't worry I've pulled people on here about this before, it's because panorama or some BBC tosh did an expo on Cruffs that everyone thinks they're a dog breeder now.

Also true, some people don't realise how bad these things can get and how quickly.

He is partially right, the ridge is often considered a very mild form of spina bifida, however is not, and completely harmless to the dogs in most cases. Some of dogs with the ridge can have a form of Dermoid sinus which is related to the human condition of spina bifida, which leads to the confusion. Pups without the ridge are often put down as obviously it's the ridge which is characteristic of the breed. The condition has also been found in other breeds, as well as pups without the ridge so it's likely all rubbish.

Either way, amazing, amazing dogs.
