as good as the F4's are though they are eco drives, i have not seen benchmarks of these hitachis but as they are 7200rpm i think it is a safe bet they will be faster.

what is the platter size of them?

Only if you want to boot from it. Otherwise all that is needed is an OS which supports GPT partitions (Vista onwards)

Can these drives be used without using GPT partitions? a have a sumvision media player that has a 2TB drive in it, if i change the drive to GPT it's still accessable in windows but not recognised by the media player.
 
No. The MBR partition table cannot define any partitioned space beyond the 2Tb limit. There simply isn't space within the partition record to do it.
