Why is E8400/E8600 still expensive?

I was thinking of upgrading from my E8400 to Sandybridge, but perhaps leaving it till Ivy Bridge is released. The only labor intensive task my PC does is gaming.

I've noticed that prices for these Core 2 Duo chips are still expensive. I'm sure you could get the first generation i5 processors for the same amount. In fact the E8400 costs more than I bought it for last year. Does anyone know why this is?

They're still work horses and great over clockers. For most people, you can push the E8*** CPUs to a 20% increase in speed on stock settings.

You can run past 4GHz stable with a few voltage bumps and do Super Pi 1M in under 12 seconds.

I love my E8500. Even if I had to step her down today after she failed a stability test in OCCT. Got to tweak the bios a bit more methinks...

i find old cpus dont really go down in price until they're obsolete, probably because people who cant/dont want to swap out there motherboard will still buy them for an upgrade

Yeh it's like the old socket 939 dual cores. Had a quick look on the bay just and there's a 4800X2 being auctioned on there for £129 (inc delivery costs), 11 bids and there's still 4 days left!

My E8500 is running great at 8x500mhz and I would find it very difficult to justify changing it for what it would entail, in terms of costs, for what would be little gain.
They are great performers and can overclock really well.

That's crazy!:eek: You could pick up a Q6600, DDR3 RAM and a mobo for that price!

I think I've been caught in all this SandyBridge hype and imagining how stupidly fast my PC would go if I were to upgrade the CPU but too be honest my PC is still quick especially after install an SSD drive. I'm really chuffed with my E8400 and like I said, I only use it for gaming and no major CPU intensive programs.

Ahh... also, I've bought a 560Ti in preparation for Crysis 2 - Would the graphics now be CPU limited?

Just upgraded from a E8200 @ 4.5 to a 2500K currently running stock and the difference even with my GTX460 is amazing. I never would have thought it to be honest with just a GTX460 but there you go.

Anyone got a feel for what I should expect to get for the E8200 on an Asus PK5C with 3GB RAM? I'm thinking of selling as a 'bundle'

The chips don't get any cheaper to produce as they become obsolete. No-one is going to sell them at a loss so there is a level below which the price doesn't fall no matter how old they get.

E6600 in ocuk members market seem to go for around £35 or even less. However I managed to sell my brother's E6600 (4 years old cpu) for £50 on the ebay and it was bought by a guy from an IT company :p. Nice chap though. Gave me +ve feedback 5-6 weeks after the transaction :D.

On Ebay the prices are crazy. You can find very low to very high prices for the same item.

indeed, my brother in law put my Athlon X2 socket 939 on a while ago, went for £103! for a bleeding socket 939 processor you know! you can get a Phenom II quad-core for that, not complaining mind as it shall go towards my Bulldozer upgrade. :)

Thats because Ebays fees are crazy, you think you have done well until you add up what it has cost to sell.

OP, why do you have a Wolfdale at stock speed? They are easy to overclock and as mentioned earlier, 4Ghz is a good target to aim for.

Anyone running a Wolfdale at stock should be banned from the forums!! :p

My wolfy E8400 is running at 3.8, but cant get it to 4ghz as it fails in intel burntest. Im guessing my memory is holding me back, or its cos I have the old wolfy cpu.

If I remember rightly my wolfy build will be 3yrs old in march, and Im still as happy with the performance as when I built it, as it still runs everything I throw at it perfectly. Im planning to stick a "2gb 6950" in soon and Im hoping it will run games smoothly for another 1-2 years before cpu starts to let the side down;)

Its crazy, my last system cost like £1500 more and it lasted about 2yrs before cpu started holding things back (AMD [email protected]), The first game was Colin McRae - DiRT that the cpu was struggling with

But with the E8400, its eating all the games I throw at it and cross fingers and toes, I should be able to keep this build for a total of 4-5 years or maybe longer before I have todo a cpu, memory, motherboard upgrade.

A lot of games now run considerably better with quad cores so a Q6600 would be a good upgrade I think :)

Yeh, I thought about overclocking it - but everything runs fine to be honest. Or perhaps I'm just being a bit of a p***y lol. I might have to invest in a better cooler before overclocking. I'm using an Arctic Pro Rev2 and the CPU idles at 36C. I think when I play games like Mass Effect 2, it reaches 44C but I'm not sure..... just downloaded hardware monitor now.

Whats the point until games get chuggy, cos its not like your going to see a improvement, only in benchmarking or using fraps.

I tried to make my last build last a tad longer by upgrading the [email protected] to a opty [email protected] and it solve the prob, as Dirt ran much smoother but the board didnt really like the cpu upgrade, so built this wolfy system about 6months later.
