Epic Welsh Roads

its the bloody welsh water tankers been goin back and forth on that road over the winter because a lot of the service reservoirs were frozen and theyve been turing the road into craters

Ahh thats why, i was down there the other week with a colleague, was going to whiz over there to get to the triangle as we finished early down in Maentwrog and as he'd never been around it before, but got confronted with the road closed signs :(

It was in pretty bad shape when i went over it before Christmas, especially over on the Ysbyty Ifan end.

Bala pass is good, up into the hills in and around Snowdon.

Head for the hills and you can't go too far wrong. Watch out for the sneaky hand held cameras though! :)

That's closed at the moment :(

The B4407?

Damn, that best re-open by late April, thats my highlight of driving to Shell Island!

However nothing is more annoying that getting stuck behind the biggest motorhome wales has ever seen whilst on that road. Yes it happened to me. No room at all for overtaking.

Hopefully they'll sort it out soon, it is a lovely road!

B4391 from Penybontfawr ish up across to Bala.
Llanberis pass from bangor, then down towards Portmadoc
The B4393 from Llanfyllin to Lake Vynwy
The mountain lane road (it has a number) from Lake Vynwy to Bala
A4212 from Bala to Trawsfynydd.
I can't remember which road the Evo Triangle (part A5?) but the roads just up from the A5 towards Denbeigh/Ruthin (B5105, B4501 etc are pretty good)

In truth most of the roads there are very good but is picking and choosing to avoid the traffic. I have had good fun along the more major roads and the more minor ones. Personally if I am out for a day drive from Shropshire to Wales I usually go via Bala! Or head for South Shropshire and just a bit in to Mid Wales as the roads are emptier!

Try the A4069 in the Brecons on your way up...here's what I typed up a few months back when I went

A4069 - drove this initially from the Llangadog end but I drove it three times so sampled both directions (it runs between Llangadog and Brynamman).

Cracking road, some very twisty and bumpy bits, definite hot hatch rather than GT sort of road I thought! Sheep and horses everywhere, and very little margin of error if you get it wrong in places, with large stones, bridge parapets and drainage ditches all ready for the unwary. Some corners are unsighted, off camber or over a crest so I'd advise anyone to take it slow at first.

I tried the single track road that comes off just below the hairpin but it was damp, very rough and not really wide enough for me to be confident in driving it quickly..turned around and came back.

I also tried the B4560 between Llangynidr and Beaufort, another great road but when I drove it it was very busy with cyclists struggling up the hill.

Coming up from Bwlch you have poor visibility as a lot of corners are beyond blind crests/summits, I'd recommend coming the other way if you want to go fast. If you came the way I did there is a narrow width restriction due to an old bridge in Llangynidr, nothing over 6ft 6 wide and this limit is enforced with deeply unforgiving steel pinch points (more like tank traps!) which have clearly taken a battering over the years!

Also tried the A483, A470, A44 and the A488 on my way back to the west midlands from the Brecons/Neath area....southern part of the A488 in particular was great and extremely empty.

'Unsuitable for Motors' on a signpost here in North Wales is actually the Welsh for Epic Road! We don't translate it so you English fools don't find the best roads and we can keep them nice and clear for ourselves.
