Activision has hit DJ Hero developer Freestyle Games with severe layoffs and axed the Guitar Hero series, Eurogamer understands.
United Front's open world game True Crime has been cancelled, sources have told Eurogamer.
An announcement is expected tonight ahead of the publication of Activision's financial results.
In December last year Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said Guitar Hero, and the music genre, had a future following dismal sales of Warriors of Rock.
"It's no secret that not just Guitar Hero, but also Rock Band, and the music category in general, do not have the same mass appeal today that they did a few years ago," he said.
"That said, I think that we would be foolish to not try and build on the strength of the Guitar Hero brand, because as you said, it's a pretty strong brand with great recognition and great likeability, and there's a lot to work with there.
"I think the road to rejuvenating that category goes through innovation," he continued. "The premise of Guitar Hero - that everyone has an inner rock star - it's something that we've all done forever. Some version of singing into a hairbrush, or holding a tennis racket like a guitar, or singing karaoke, or singing into the bathroom mirror - we all do that.
"I think a lot of video game genres that have had tremendous staying power have a fantasy-fulfillment element at their core, whether it's driving the fast car, or participating in professional sports, or going into battle. People don't get to do this in everyday lives.
"So I think the core premise and the core insight at the heart of the Guitar Hero franchise is still very relevant. I just think we need to escalate the experience for people and innovate. I think the genre is still fairly new, and so I think it's probably time for us to really look at what the next level looks like for that genre."
The publisher had confirmed the return of the franchise in 2011.
Eurogamer's calls to UK developer Freestyle Games went unanswered this evening. United Front Games had not responded to Eurogamer's request for comment at the time of publication.
Eurogamer has contacted Activision for comment.

Really shocked, never ever thought activision would do this, just shows how far guitar hero has fallen from its golden years..

If true, Best. News. Ever.

They completely destroyed the franchise by pumping out release after release, barely supporting them with DLC past the first few months after promising continuous support. I'm pretty sure within the coming months something similar will happen to Rock Band, but considering all Harmonix do is Rock Band and Dance Central, which have DLC every week without fail (RB certainly) it would be a huge suprise.

About time, never the best game concept once its been done once.... What ever any company made of it, it was never going to be a long standing franchise as outside of different songs there's not a lot more that could have been added

Why are you shocked guitar heroes sales kept on plummeting with each release - nobody cares for thse games anymore, they have been done to death and once you've played one you have played thm all.
Just remember in a few years time cod will be in this exact situation - milk the Market whilst you can and axe the lot once profit starts taking real hits

Guitar Hero would be better if they cleaned it up a little and actually had a decent track list and a bigger selection of DLC. I don't know about you guys but I want my in game player to actually look like a real person, not a cartoony piece of crap and especially in the newer ones where they just have stupid devils and skeletons and stuff it's ridiculous.

Got to agree, it's the too many releases that's killed it.

I bought Guitar Hero 3 and the guitar and also DJ Hero.
I very rarely play them and have never totally finished either properly.

Then you've got the fact they've released about a million different versions and various bits of DLC on top of that. The 'You've played one, you've played them all' is certainly true. But part of me thinks that if they'd staggered the releases a lot more and made each one a big bumper with loads of tracks they may have fared better.

I doubt they are total failures, but Activision are so shrewd that they've probably just dropped them because they aren't making enough of a return.

Is that the latest true crime game that was meant to be out in a few months? True Crime Hong Kong? Or something?

If it was then damn. I was looking forward to that. Is was meant to have some innovative melee martial arts control system. Sounded like it was going to be good.

Excuse me for saying this but activision are real bas&£@ds.

Guitar Hero dead

Look out COD acti is coming for you!

They have formed another studio to work on COD, that’s 5 studios now working on it

5?!

What's happening with Modern Warfare now? Last I heard was that the original heads of Infinity Ward had gone to another publisher, possibly EA, and were going to carry on making "Modern Warfare" games while Activision kept the rights to Call of Duty and continued to publish it alongside Treyarch developing. Though there was also a legal battle going on between the former bosses of Infinity Ward and Activision?

They have also killed the new true crime game too :( I was looking forward to that one

This I am incredibly annoyed about. The developers seem to have done so much work already on creating a truly realistic Hong Kong. There was even a new video on the Xbox dash showcasing some new gameplay.:mad::mad:

Is there no way another publisher could pick it up? Was it being done by an in-house Activision team?

We'll find out at a court hearing in May :)

Respawn Entertainment is essentially everyone who was at IW when they were developing MW2, but have since all left since that bust-up with Activision last year to join this new company and start work on what I hope will be the next true MW3 installment.

According to rumours acti has got 3 of those 5 devs working on MW3 to get it out for this November, because of the mass exodus at iw they didn’t have enough people to do the job.

All i can say is thank god for that! Ever since activision/neversoft took over the Guitar Hero franchise from Harmonix, the series has been taking a swan dive.

Guitar Hero 3 was fantastic, the songs were great, the game engine was great (ghost notes and all) and the charting was great but then they release GH:WT which in theory should have been fantastic but was seriously let down by too many dull songs and incredibly boring or OTT charting of songs.

After that the series just felt like all life was sucked from it, with possibly the exception of GH:Van Halen which felt more like a classic Guitar Hero game and I have to admit it's my favourite Guitar Hero game since GH3

I wonder how Harmonix feel about this news? Considering they were the ones who originally developed the Guitar Hero franchise and to see quite a "reputable" company kill there baby must be quite hard...
