Last time I went to gay club in London (was the only place in Leicester Square that wasn't rammed) with some guy and girl mates it really wasn't bad at all - yes you get guys chatting/hitting on you but they're usually quite friendly. In the end we had a pretty fun time as we were just socialising within our group and at the end of the day it's just a bar/club.

Worst was when I went for a wizz and a guy came in, stroked my side, went to the urinal next to me to and said "How you doing?!". I'm not even joking, bad times :o

Girls go to gay clubs to get away from getting hit on all the time - maybe the same problem applies in reverse when men go to gay clubs. Just because he got annoyed at getting hit on by men all night doesn't automatically make him uncomfortable in his skin as you're saying. It would get annoying if it was happening all night - almost as annoying as getting chatted up by a whole load of stinking girls probably. But obviously you're so hip that not liking gay clubs is, well, gay.
 
Gay clubs are great fun, and the guys in the are way less sleazy towards guys than straight guys are towards girls. A polite "sorry, I'm straight" (after they have bought you a drink of course) and you are golden.
