*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

hey everyone,

I got my 480 gtx the day before.. it is a bit loud when under full load but it's bearable..
my setup is an asus p6t deluxe v2, and an i7 920..

The card idles at 45-50C.. Under full load it can reach 93C. Are these temps
ok? They seem pretty high to me..

Now the card is very close to the motherboard chipset.. which gets hot now.. it can reach about 60 degrees after a bit of time and full load on the card.. is this temp high?

my case is crap so I leave it open.. I have an xp-120 cooler blowing on my cpu so the cpu is ok.. Also the if u see a pic of my motherboard(p6t deluxe v2 again), as I am using a pci audio card I CANNOT use the first pci-e slot for the vga as the pci slot completely block the airway, so I use the second(counting from top) pci-e slot.. But now the vga has like 1cm from the bottom of the case.. is that an issue?
Anyway to sum it up my questions are:
1)Are 60 C for motherboard temp too high? It gets there after like 6-7 minutes furmark which is an extreme and unrealistic stess I believe.. I tried using an external house fan blowing in the case from the side, that drops mb temperature to like 52-53C under load.. but is it necessary?(as if the gtx 480 doesn't make enough noise lol)
2)Is a load temp of 93C ok for the card? seems very high to me? At what temp should I be worried?
3)I tried overclocking the card(:P) though I must stress here that I have no intention of altering the voltage.. I just wanted to see what it can do at STOCK voltage(as heat is high already, don;t like playing with fire). It got to 469/4070 I think.. I noticed that the gpu temp DID NOT go higher under stress than with stock clocs.. again around 92-93. But then I read about some guys blowing up the vrm on their gtx 570..
So my question is can I overclock the card withouth messing with voltage of course until I see artifacts by looking ONLY at the gpu temp? Or will I blow up the VRM??

Tbh be honest i wouldnt think about overclocking that until you have some decent cooling on it! i would go with a new case for better air flow, could you take a picture and post it on the forum to see what your setup currently looks like with the GFX card in?

I think the 480 is meant to take high temps to about 100c but 90c is where i would be slightly concerned. Most 480's on load are around 80c and dont go above that.

I think you could solve all your problems with a new case and decent airflow granted your case is "crap" as you say :D

are you sure? I read a couple reviews(anandtech) and they say 92C under full load.. I am talking about furmark 1920X1200 + 32X AA + xtremeburning mode + displacement mapping + post fx(these last 3 do make a difference in my experience)..
If you think the temp is not normal then for the purpose of testing I can remove my sound card and put the vga 1 slot up where it will have room below it(like 15-20cm).. As I said before it now has 1 cm below it!

P.S Can't get a pic right now I am missing my camera connect to pc cable

ok update
I removed my audigy card(and am now using onboard sound lol)
So now the card has plenty of room below it.. it does make a slight difference, the card is now at 90C, and also the fan runs at 67%, it used to go at 71%+..
Strange thing is that although the card is now directly on the motherboard chip it does not get hot.. wtf.. maybe before it was blowing the air directly on the sensor..
So this now leaves us with 1 question only.. Can I overclock it(on stock voltage) as long as a I keep the gpu temperatures under 95C.. or should I be worried about the VRM blowing up? I read stories about guys blowing up the vrm on gtx 570 cards with veery good cooling low temps, withouth overheating anything

I love my 480 :D
It is idling at 38/39 degrees (34% fan speed ~1780RPM)
Clocks are as follows (i'm still in the process of OCing):
Core: 821MHz
Shader: 1642MHz
Memory: 1882MHz
Custom fan settings.

When playong MW2 (max settigns) max temp got 73 degrees and max GPU usage got to 97, i find the GPU usage surprisingly high?

You got a 120hz monitor?

Hi sorry if this is slightly off main topic but would I be better getting the £210 ish GTX480 or one of the newer type Gigabyte GTX560Ti cards at £192.
I am not up on these new GPU's so I do not know if the newer nvidia GPU's like the GTX560 will be faster allround than the GTX480.
Some quick idea's are appreciated thanks for any advice!

Ordered mine yesterday and just checked the delivery time estimate -

The estimated time of arrival is between 12:37 - 13:37 :D

It's a sign surely, that this card is going to be awesome... or should i say 1337

Look around the forums and the start of this thread and you will see the same agonising decision-process being taken by a lot of us.

At the end of the day it depends on your priority. For the money, the 480 is the most powerful card at that price rage but also runs [relatively] hot and loud.

The overclocked 560s can nearly match a stock 480 in bechmarks, but have less RAM, and once you OC the 480 it will destroy the 560, especially at higher resolutions.

If you get a 480, one of the fastest single GPU's in the world id expect it to run a bit hotter and a bit more noisy than other cards, at the end of the day it delivers great perfromance.
