One Space... Or Two?

I get grief for this but I refuse to use txt spk in texts and always use proper English (something even my almost 60 year old mum doesn't do anymore).

Im the same mate. I use proper grammar when writing a text (good job I get them free lol!) but I struggle to understand some of the gibberish. It's the whole using abbreviated words to explain things. Most people get free texts but yet can't write in proper english m8. lol !

Apparently that level doesn't include simple spelling.

Its Friday night and I am drunk, also I tried to keep it simple and on your level for you.:D

Well, it obviously is, as all reputable publishing houses will tell you, as do all modern style guides.

You are still wrong, you are embarrassing yourself.

Well, considering that either single or double-spacing is acceptable grammatically you would be dismissing employees with probable excellent potential on the basis of your own personal predilection.

That doesn't appear to be an educated way to select potential employees.

TBH it's probably fairer than what some employers do... AKA the whole throwing up in the air and randomly picking up, cutting the pile and throwing one half etc. :p

I use whatever the word processor says, which I'm pretty sure is one. I used to be taught a double after a full stop, but then I was taught at the same time one before the full stop as well so...

I don't think WORD will correct double spacing after a full stop.

Nope it doesn't (just tried). In fact it doesn't correct any number of spaces after a full stop but will call your attention to any more than one elsewhere.

I don't either, never really have. The worst person for text speak is my mum in fact, most of my friends type full sentences with punctuation, probably in part to the increasing popularity of smartphones that mean the distinction between text and email is getting smaller.

Is this the twilight zone?

Two spaces after a full stop? Someone wake me up from this nightmare as this isn't the real world.

Even vBulletin doesn't understand double spacing. Try it.

Thought two spaces was because on old typewriters, typographers used two so it was easier to read sentences due to the font. Nowadays they use one in publishing though in everyday life either is fine as long as its consistent.

I always leave 2 spaces after a full stop. I guess its just habit, or is it? I was educated in the 80s and 90s, I guess my teachers are to blame?

Hmm I'm confused now. I'm pretty sure I do 2 spaces but 1 space looks OK too.

Personally, I use one space but wouldn't be adverse to using two if the fancy takes me.

Anyone who makes a fuss is being a little pathetic really.

As long as spelling, grammar and punctuation is otherwise fine, it really shouldn't matter.

Well I sincerely hope none of you ever type a job application letter to me, it would just end up in the bin, as it seems to me the quality of English language and sentence structure being taught at schools is poor.

I hope if I do you don't forget to check, because I wouldn't want to work with you!

Yes I would.

Need a certain level of eduction to work where I do, for you I hear Mcdonald's are hiring.

Education?

McDonald's?

;)

Really surprised at the answers here. Always two after a full stop and one after a comma. That's the way proper written text should be anyway. Obviously on a forum it doesn't matter but for essays and the like it does.

looks like this Forum auto corrects two spaces and makes it one anyway?? or is that just Firefox freaking me out?

I'm fairly sure that Word will autocorrect one space after a full stop to two spaces, or that it will autocorrect two spaces after a full stop to one space, depending on what you've asked it to do.

On thinking about it, I believe I would leave two spaces, as this is likely to increase readability. In practice, I imagine my work is likely to contain a mixture of one, two and occasionally three spaces at the end of a sentence.
