Evening All,

Does anyone know if I can take the HDDs out from my MyBooks? I have 2 x 1TB MyBooks, USB2 versions. I am thinking of putting a NAS together, or something like that as I have another 1.5TBs worth of HDDs lying about and having 3.5TB in one place to store all my stuff would be pretty nice.

If they can come out, does anyone know if they are IDE or SATA inside? I think that soon as I open up the MyBook I wont get it together again so I only want to do this if I know it will work.

Thanks

They are SATA drives

When I did both of mine, I used brute force :o probably not the best way but it worked!

Ah ha! So it will work then?

Are the drives labelled with any information at all? Just so I know what I will be working with.

The 1tb in a MyBook will probably be a WD10EAVS with 8mb cache. Spec should be close to the 10EARS.

Instructions on the link below for getting the case apart, after pushing in the tabs you will need to pop apart the sides of the case and slide it out (its a bit tricky but do-able).

Hope that helps

In honesty, is it worth it with these drives? Or should I look to sell them on and grab some fresh 1-2Tb drives instead?

I have a 320gb wd mybook. I would quite like to format as I was planning to give it away.
I presume fomatting via USB would take an age?

If so perhaps my best option would be to open it up and connect via sata. Can you put them back together after you have opened them up?
