Vegas!

Had good luck with the $20 trick when in Vegas in 2009 - got an upgrade from a crap room at Caesars to Augustus Tower with a fountain view.

Went back to Vegas last year, ended up staying in MGM Grand - not bad although I preferred the location of Caesars.

8th July I think

Im there from 14th onward for the getting married thing, see ya there for a pint?

@OP- I had 5 days there with my other half last year, we loved it so much we are going back to get married there!

In terms of things to do, just pick out some of the big hotels and have a mooch around- Wynn/Encore were my favourite as the interior was just more modern than the others.

Freemont St is awesome for a night out, you will get very, very, very drunk here. For almost free!

Food- Wynn buffet was the best buffet in my opinion. Cafe Society at the Encore does a 'cowboy' bone in ribeye steak which is easily the best steak I have ever eaten. In fact, we are pretty much set on having our wedding meal in the private dining section at Society as the food was that good! Don't forget in and out burger- animal style!

Ellis Island does mega mega cheap food if you just want to refuel for next to nothing, as does Denny's.

Shopping- Fashion Show Mall and the Outlets by Freemont St are the best two places to head to. Think Levis for about 20 quid or less.

Pics from the Bar at the top of 'The Hotel' @ Mandalay Bay. Well worth the trip for Sunset. We also had a cracking lightening storm coming in from the mountains in the East to watch.

did you notice if Mandalay Bay had a policy on taking photos with a tripod from the bar?

There was a no tripod policy at the Stratosphere along with the Paris Hotel which annoyed me cos I was looking at taking some long exposures when i was over but couldn't :(

Honestly don't know, the daytime picture was from the 'other halves' little compact Lumix and the night shot was from my 8MP Sony Compact.

Might be ok, but it's something to ask. It's also worth bearing in mind the large glass panels there for safety which will affect photos.

Come to think of it, the bar does get quite busy for sunset so I doubt big tripods would be allowed. Possible a small mini one on a table top if you are by the window could be fine.

just wondered cos any long exposure shot i did when i was over was at street level.

quite happy with the result though would have preferred a higher viewpoint.

Im off to Vegas at the end of the month for a week, part of my new years res to get out and see some more of the world!

Ive got the grand canyon to do ofcourse, im staying at the stratosphere.

What have people done before? what would you recommend?

Please tell me its as awesome as it is in my head....and if it isnt...just lie to me.

I've been there twice in 2 years.

LOVED it more than any other holiday I've ever been on. Last time was with my misses and she loved it too.

The shows were not cheap to be honest, but best to go with as much as you can, to enjoy the most!

I stayed at the stratosphere, I enjoyed their pool and hot tub near it, absolutely amazing! (shame its about 20 mins walk to the nearest bigger hotels, but its always a nice walk!

Hope you have a good time.

I'm going at the start of October for a week and can not wait. Its been about 10 years in the making :D

Were booking next week, but to be honest, were still lost as to where to stay and who to book through. We want central - thats as far as we have got :D

I think last time I was asking on here about who to book through, bookit came up as a good choice. Think rotty suggested it. Is this still the case?

Any other good places to check? Lastminute seems pretty cheap, but I know nothing :)

So, there you go. Where do we stay thats central, and who do we book through. Help. Please. So much choice makes me a saaaad penguin

Thanks

First time I went, we stayed at the MGM. I would give this place 5 stars.

Loved it and would definitely go back there! rooms were immaculate, LOADS of things to do around the hotel too and just at the end of all the busy areas!

It's also mad on the weekends so it makes it very exciting!

the MGM is well short of many of the hotels, the quality is that good at a lot of places

Oh really? Next time I go then, somewhere a bit nicer it'll be.

It felt top to me, but you're probably right. I'm sure there are still even better.

Apologies for hijacking the thread but we are also struggling to choose which hotel to stay at for 5 nights in Sep(Sat to Wed). 1st time visit for us too, so I think its best to have a hotel on the strip.

Rotty, do you recommend Treasure Island? Its seems to be the best deal available for me to book at the moment 30% off £350 for 5 nights. Been looking at PH £437, Vdara £572, Mirage £509 and MGM £534 too.

Ta :)

PH was excellent :)

just LOL at the price though. 4 nights for £437? I paid £120 for 3 nights in September! Avoid Vegas at the weekend, waste of money.

5 nights I meant to type. I wondered how you managed to stay there for so little?

I played about with flights to avoid staying Fri/Sat night in Vegas, but it just put the flight prices up.

Basically, in Vegas, the prices CRASH during the week. You could probably stay in the Bellagio during the week for less than you'd pay to stay at TI at the weekend.

Why not fly into Los Angeles over the weekend - it will cost less money to fly there than Vegas anyway - do a day in LA, stay over in LA (I paid 50 quid for a night at the Holiday Inn LAX) then pick up a hire car (30 quid a day for a Mustang Cabrio) and drive it to Vegas, arriving Vegas on the Monday.

This way you:

a) Get to see LA
b) Get to roadtrip the Mojave desert
c) Get to save a HUGE amount of money on your stay in Vegas, that will more than fund the LA stuff.

Going all that way and just seeing Vegas is a waste anyway.

Flights already booked now, remember my other thread.

Flying to San Francisco (4 nights)
Pick up Mustang hopefully driving to Monterey (2 nights)
Drive to Yosemite (3 nights)
Drive to Lone Pine (1night)
Drive to Vegas (5 nights)
Fly Home

Didn't fancy LA at all tbh. From the prices I've been looking at the price on Fri/Sat night does go up about £50-£60, but like I said by arriving on Sun and flying home on Friday our flights would have been more expensive so we were better off staying in Vegas on Sat. £75 per person extra for flights with the same duration/connection.

http://www.i4vegas.com/ is what Ive been using to check hotel prices.
