PCI-E Riser cards

I want to be able to mount my graphics card slightly away from my mobo as part of custom case build.

I have seen a PCI-E "riser" which is a 7cm ribbon cable which presumably plugs into the PCI-E socket on the mobo and then into the graphics card (wont link as its on a competitor site). Have I got the right sort of thing do what I want?

Thanks

Hold up. I'd not recommend using one.

I've had a 50% success rate with them. And in fact on that build (linked) it didn't work. I ended up having to take the backplate off the card and it was just luck that I could make it fit in the slot fairly normally.

I tried 3 graphics cards, an ATI 4350, an Nvidia 7-series and a different Nvidia 7-series. The only one that worked was one of the Nvidia's. The other two had the same issue of barely even being able to POST.

However another system I built, it worked fine!

Could you use something like this if you wanted to run SLI but you can't use the slot directly below? (e.g. aftermarket cooling or there would be too much heat being blown down onto second card)
