I recently purchased the benq from OCUK and I got it and it kept getting negative colour trailing so benq arranged for a replacement delivery and have recieved it today. Not got it up yet to check if i've got the same problem but I have been reading that its average input lag is 6ms with turbo mode *ON* and around 20ms with it *OFF*

The Asus has an average of 1.6ms
Though i'm not a fan of the glossy finishes i'm thinking about it.

What would you go for? Asus or BenQ.

Preferably want some monitor gurus in here to fill me in on differences and whats better :p

The 'negative trailing' is an overdrive artifact caused by a sub-standard overdrive algorithm. It is there to some extend on every current LCD monitor but may be better hidden and thus less noticeable. As I've said time and time again the input lag measurements are never accurately quantifyed beyond 8.33ms for a 120Hz monitor. Depending on where you look these figures will vary but I can assure you the input lag is imperceptibly slight on the XL2410T - this is something the overdrive trailing has nothing to do with. For some more information about the overdrive trailing you're experiencing check out this article

I know that AMA has nothing to do with the trailing.
Any settings to dull down trailing a little?

I know that instant mode increases input lag.

So the negative trailing is less obvious on the asus?
The negative trailing on my previous panel was surprisingly bad and the benQ Tech support told me that AMA would prevent this but it actually made it worse. But when I turned it off it completely went.

What exactly does AMA do?

AMA (Advanced Motion Acceleration) is BenQ's pixel overdrive technology. Basically it surges extra voltage through the LCD matrix during certain transitions which are traditionally very slow and 'request' low voltages (i.e. grey to grey transitions). This is what causes the negative trailing - but without it on, as explored in the review, you get a lot of conventional trailing which is a lot more noticeable and defeats part of the purpose of a highly responsive 120Hz monitor. The 120Hz ASUS monitor I still haven't got around to using but my esteemed colleague has confirmed that the overdrive is handled better and the trailing from this is a bit less obtrusive. If you are able to somehow return the BenQ and try the ASUS (without sacrificing your DSR rights to return if not satisfied after up to 7 days of testing) this could be worthwhile. The ASUS has a glossy screen and greater colour vibrancy so you might find you need to tone it down with a bit of tweaking. Some people have described it as 'garish' but I haven't seen it myself and the XL2410T I tested was no stunner in the image quality department.

Edit: Just a note - the ASUS VG236H(E) is a 120Hz monitor whereas the VK246H is a standard 60Hz affair.

I'll see how the BenQ is tonight and if I don't get on with it I might try and get a refund and get in the market for another 120hz.

I like 120hz because of how smooth motion is. I don't want it just for the 3D.
So what other 120hz monitors are out there that are good? Even without 3D would be nice

Im not very impressed with the panel on the BenQ. Im on my third replacement. Ive also ordered the Asus VG236 and am picking that up on my way home. I will be able to see them side by side and then decide which one Im keeping.

Tell me how it is :)
As I said, i'll see how mine is tonight.
The negative trailing is a big problem as I sit fairly close and on counter strike it is so obvious even in bright environments

Yeah i'm definitely getting a refund on this.

Colours are so bad on counter strike and the darks are really dark which puts me at a hugeee disadvantage...

Any 120hz monitors with the same or lower input lag and ful HD.
So any that are better than this one for around the same price?

Call out to PCM2 :D

Did you try calibrate it? Also check this if you havent already

Funny you should mention input lag on the benQ.

With vsync on, compared to the viewsonic 120hz panel, the benq has a lot more noticeable input lag. On the viewsonic with vsync on I can barely notice any input lag.

Ive been using the benq now for ages, the colours are good, the blacks are darker than the viewsonic, but Im not really sure its an improvement in games over the viewsonic, particularly in counterstrike. I cant seem to get it to be smooth by locking fps like I did with the viewsonic. Need to reall put the viewsonic back on and try that again.

To be honest after all this headache with which screen is better etc I feel like going back to CRT. I have a 22inch CRT just sitting right next to me.

Ideally the image would be pleasing out of the box but that obviously isn't the case here for the vast majority of users. When people talk about 'calibrating' a monitor like the XL2410T they really mean tweaking the image to their taste. You aren't ever going to achieve a highly accurate image due to various limitations of the monitor but you can certainly improve things from the 'out of the box' settings. Unfortunately there are many people who just aren't satisfied with the image from their unit no matter what tweaking they try - and having used the XL2410T I can fully empathise. That's not to say they're all 'bad' or that it can't be a great monitor for some people, it's just that the weight of dissatisfaction is becoming a burden.

I am eager to hear Shetlander's thoughts on the ASUS but the general concensus from users (some of whom I know very well) is that the ASUS is one of the best 120Hz monitors currently available. I am equally eager to try out the upcoming 120Hz Samsung monitors although due to market positioning and the push of their proprietary 3D technologies I expect them to be comparatively expensive. Same case with the upcoming Acer models pushing integrated Nvidia 3D Vision. I wouldn't be surprised if LG and possibly even ASUS release some new 120Hz monitors (with or without such integration) later this year.

Well no because true 120Hz basically enables the monitor to be used for stereoscopic 3D. That was the original intention of the technology but it just so happens that the extra responsiveness has been a compelling reason for lots of people to choose the technology. The ASUS VG236HE model, like the BenQ, supports stereoscopic 3D but doesn't come bundled with any sort of stereoscopic glasses or receivers at extra cost to the consumer.

Been reading up on the Asus and how well it hides trailing so I think i'll refund this BenQ.

120hz monitors should definitely be continued. The smoothness is incredible
*edit*

Do you reckon OCUK will accept a refund?
I received the monitor on the 1st of Feb and had really bad negative trailing in which BenQ organised a very nice pick up of my current and delivery or a replacement and yet I still can't get on with it. Where abouts would I contact about a refund?

Owned both monitors. RMA'd the Benq due to issues and purchased the Asus. Much better monitor in my opinion. No faults apart from being .5 inch smaller!

Well Im sat looking at the Asus VG236HE now and although it has a very slight backlight bleed along the bottom of the screen the overall picture is clear and consistent. Its nothing like the Benq. On my replacement Benq, there was still a slight amount of purple bleed but it also now has a patchy screen when viewing a black image as though something in the panel is thinner in some areas than others if that makes sense. I quite like the glossy screen, the detail seem crisper somehow.
Also the glossy frame matches my mirror edition razer keyboard.
The height adjustment isnt quite as tall as the Benq and isnt as adjustable. Apart from height, the Asus has a slight forward & backward tilt where as the Benq will swivel and rotate into portrait if you use it like that.
Another thing Ive noticed is that I cant set both monitors to 120Hz. One has to be set to 60Hz. I presume thats a graphics card thing.

I got my Benq refunded and hav enow got the LG W2363

And it is milesssss better than the benq by far!
Overdrive trail is basically non existent in 2D. Haven't used 3D yet as I have no glasses so can't comment on that.

The colours are very nice even for a non gloss screen. Very sharp and so far I cannot fault it!

My mum who knows nothing about technology came in and said "That monitor looks a lot better than the last" Which shows something :P

For what its worth I'm loving my Benq 3D monitor :D the backlight bleed lots of people complain about is not a big deal at all even when using the screen in total darkness, yes its there but it doesnt bother me. If you want something to complain about then the loss of detail in very dark areas of a scene is far worse, also colour banding can be more noticable at times than on other monitors I've used.

All that said tho I wouldnt want to change it for anything else thats currently available. Stick it on the RGB colour preset and its fine for web browsing, looking at your holiday snaps, watching films and downloaded tv episodes, and gaming. And I absolutly love the 3D effect in games :D especially some older games suprisingly, flatout2 for example is not even rated by nvidia but its amazing!
