Hi all,

I have just had to claim for my desktop PC as my pipes burst and water went directly into the top of the case whilst powered on, I managed to dismantle and dry it put pretty quickly, left it for a few days in a hot airing cupboard and there is no signs of life except the PSU fan comes on.

Direct Line have agreed that they will payout, and have past my claim onto a specialist, which can take another 5 days before they even contact me. My. main worry is that they try and offer me a ready made PC World or Dell machine of similar value (£800) which would not bring the spec even close to what I have just lost (sandybridge 2500, ati 6950 etc).

Has anyone made a claim through Direct Line for a home made PC? Do they pay by cheque, hand out a high st shop pc, replace the parts or what? Has got me very worried and not sure where I stand if they do offer me something I am not happy with.

Sorry for my longwinded 1st post.

Molly x

If they offer a substandard replacement you say no and give them the reasons why it's unacceptable.

Look at your insurance terms and conditions. See what they have to say about compensation for damage of objects.
If they offer a crap replacement refer to the terms and conditions.
However due to the snall print you will most likely have to accept what they give you. Sorry:(

They have a policy of replacing for same spec iirc.

Check. Did when I broke a laptop years ago.

I really hope it is a cheque. The reason im so worried is I have kitchen appliance insurance with Homeserve, our washing machine broke which was a Bosch and they sent us out a Hotpoint replacement, the spec they matched was load capacity and spin speed and that was it, no choice what so ever and gone from a £500 machine to a £320 one.

I got a new toshiba delivered back.

How old was the washing machine?

It's a good idea to keep all receipts for proof of purchase and their value. It's also worth mentioning to the insurance company that you have specialist equipment, most charge peanuts for the extra cover and piece of mind.

Strange - I had a dream ladt night that some one walked into our house and walked out with my system..

Agreed - also provided them with your valuation - don't wait for them to come to you.

Send them details of your system, replacement costs etc.

They offered me a very small sum when my old Dell kicked the bucket. It was old, granted, but the sum was so small I couldn't be bothered going through with it.

Also, welcome to the boards Molly; although my old pussycat was called Molly so I hope you don't mind me picturing you as a ginger tabby :D

Just an update with my claim- Direct Line paying up, they replace items like PCs on an old for new basis, and had I bought an off the shelf PC I would have had a PC delivered to me by tomorrow. As for custom made PCs they admit they would not be in a position to source all the components, so the pay by cheque :)

Only problem is they cannot send out a cheque in my name, they will only do it to a shop directly. Contacted 2 local shops and neither were to willing to help. Contacted Overclockers and yipee they will take the cheque :D so all in all the best result possible, am very happy. Just awaiting the final valuation before they send the cheque to overclockers.

Similiar to when someone ran me over and my commuter bike. It's a custom build, the driver's insurance just asked for a shop to invoice for the parts and they will send a cheque.

That is really good news. You get the amount you want and OCUK get your business!

Well finally got my cheque, I had to get my PC priced by local shop. It was a 3.2ghz amd athlon x2 BE based machine, crosshair motherboard and 8800 gtx graphics card, 2 HDD and 2 x optical drives. So nothing up to date, my local shop said replacement cost of £480. Insurance cheque arrived yesterday, and it was for £1018 :D and in my name so will have to cash it then order goods, from OcUK of course :)
