where do wild birds go to die?

Now you've thought about it, be prepared to start noticing them, if you're in a city obviously pidgeons will be most prevalent.

Since remarking once "why do you never see a dead pidgeon lying around?" I now see them all the time. I see dead pidgeons.

McDonalds have a special force that scour the country for dead birds / animals and they then make Big Macs etc out of them!

lots of land + low average bird density compared to area of land + corpses get eaten in a few days + a sick bird will likley land and be sat in a bush / tree + your inside most of the time + even when outside you dont cover much land to notice the corpses + birds are generally small = you dont see many dead birds.. (did I forget anything?)
