Can't uodate OZC firmware

I'm really impressed with the speed of my new 120GB Vertex2 drive but I can'f find a way to udate the firmware. I have downloaded the latest version 1.28 I think and also the Tools that OCZ provide. However when I try and do the update it tells me that "can't update a primary drive." (or something similar) I'm using it as my OS disc (C) and I'm very reluctant to change the status of the OS drive. Can anyone advise please? Thanks

that drives not on the 25nm process though is it? afaik updates 1.25-1.28 are only for the 25nm drives

There is no point updating to 1.28 if you have 1.24 or newer already. There have been no changes between 1.24 and 1.28 other than support for new NAND types and configurations - if your drive requires the new firmware for this reason, it'll already come shipped with it. The only reason they released 1.28 is because of the number of people bricking their drives by back-flashing them from 1.25/6/7/8 to the "actual latest version" 1.24.

Wait for 1.28a, 1.29 or whatever it ends up being called (due mid February).

As already stated. No point in upgrading the firmware at all.

And something maybe worth considering in the mad rush to upgrade firmware that seems to surround SSD's... is unless it actually sorts some problem you have, or brings something positive (like improved TRIM processing etc.)... then why bother!? If only because with any firmware upgrade, there is always the chance of bricking your device! Only my personal opinion/s of course.

PS. I'm "only" on 1.23 and have no intention of upgrading the firmware until I do a system re-build and only then if it looks like it's bringing something useful to the table.

Funnily enough, firmware 1.29 was released around an hour before this thread was made. There's no official changelog yet (later tonight or tomorrow we'll see it) but apparently it's a "must". There's only two ways of updating:

1) OCZ Toolbox. This method doesn't work with the current boot drive so you'll need to boot from an OS on a different drive or plug the drive into another machine, for example.
2) Linux Firmware Updater. Only works from within Linux but you can boot from a Linux Live CD to do this. There is a detailed guide to this process here.

my 2E is still on the 1.23 it shipped with. il see what the 1.29 has to offer but unless it realy is a "must" il stick with what im on as its working fine

.... but apparently it's a "must". .

I think it's crazy that this has been released and yet no change log has been (yet)! Not that it looks like it's stopped some people from flashing it!! Madness without knowing what's in it in my opinion.

Think I'll wait and see what he change log says. But unless it's something REAL important... still don't think I'll bother. Question... if your drive is working fine, then as I've said before "what really is the point"? Though I shall reserve final judgement until I see a change log.

Must admit that lack of info. re firmware upgrades (I think you should be able to register an interest with OCZ and get Email updates etc. similar to what you can get with most Software apps. / tools / programs) and the lack of a "simple" foolproof method that works with Windows in situ for the "majority" are a couple of things that rather let OCZ down.

PS. I would in fact go as far as saying that releasing firmware upgrades like this, without a change log, is some what unprofessional!

Reducing your SSDs' lifetimes, speed and capacity without changing the model number at all is also somewhat unprofessional. Having the most badly organised information forum ever conceived is also somewhat unprofessional.

But hey, it's OCZ.

Fair comments ;)

I have to agree here. My SSD came with Firmware version 1.27 out of the box and the drive works a treat. I don't intend upgrading the firmware unless I run into problems.
