Rift: Planes of Telera Beta

Got a question.

Downloading beta now, cant play tons though, cause im really busy; how is the gameplay? I never bothered playing WoW for a period worth mentioning, but love EVE to bits and have played countless numbers of other F2P games..(Perfect World etc).

Game looks okay from videos, and depth of class system and rifts sounds fun, but i wonder how the gameplay is.

Action seems very responsive, which was my main problem with LotRO and WAR. WoW is the best at both PvE and PvP because things happen the instant you press the button, and Rift seems to have managed to match that.

I'm just wondering how finely tuned the soul system is. I'm trying out Pyromancer, with Elementalist and Archon as my other two, and at the moment it seems that, other than the pet from the Elementalist, every spell I've got is just novelty and I'm only ever using my Pyromancer skills.

Okay okay, I'll admit I'm barely into the game, only lvl 7, but so far it just feels horrible.

Top whack graphical settings, it feels dull and uninspired, okay, its a beta and new but theres a billion people everywhere, every fight is 4 seconds long, the rifts are dozens and dozens of people all ganking bosses that survive for a few seconds top. THe quests are epically pathetic, its got the same public group join for rubbish pointless quest feel that Warhammer had. Its too fast, theres no real feel or story in any way at all, despite how many people there are quests take no time at all and feel worthless.

By the same point in Lotro, WoW, Conan, City of Heroes, basically anything there was a feel to the game, a reason to play, something grabbing.

AS of yet, utterly underwhelmed.

Yes, nice tree's for attacks but, 7 levels in, with 3 tree's and a dozen different spells.

I don't know, it just feels, arcadey somehow, animation is terrible, just lacking in every last department so far.

Just settled down now and about to log in and give this a bash. Glad I waited until the beta before pre-ordering. :p

edit: anyone got a ts/vent/mumble server on the go with fellow ocukers?

edit 2: what faction are you playing on sagespire?

it is last beta, and loads of people have it....as it started again last night, everyone was logging in and it was full of people ....it will be like this at the beggining...every game like this is full at starters...

re graphics, I quite like them....I think I had everything set to high by default, but moved all sliders to max to see if my 5770 in crossfire can handle it...and it can :) maybe it was bit laggy but I blame huge crowds running around. will play more and see and if the settings are too hing, I will move them bit down.

no you dont.first month is included in the price

We are playing Defiant on Sagespire. I will be playing most nights as my Cleric (Caprice) most nights if BT will let let me.

I do have my own TS server in my house if push comes to shove. But at the moment, I would just like to play without 40seconds latency during the evening.

Just made a character on sagespire but the game runs even worse for me than the last beta, this time the screen flashes every so often and it makes me CPU and graphics card heat up more than any other game (for some reason my screen went black and the graphics card fan dropped to zero for a few seconds then powered back on :S), even though it looks rubbish :(

Its not that there are soo many people, Lotro in starter area's, well did the smart thing and split up the first 6 levels(if you wanted to) into separate area's so it wasn't over crowded.

The problem is, its that thing where you get a quest, they are right next to you, everyone runs off, kills 4-5 people, runs back. Theres no quest hub then everyone goes off in separate directions and spreading out far and wide. Every last square inch I've seen so far is just jam packed with players.

Yes ok, end game is most important for most people, but does the world up to end game have to be utterly utterly pathetic? May aswell just make it everyone starts at max level, chooses a build and raids if so.

But the main thing is, attacks feel boring, I rolled a ranger, every single attack looks the same bar maybe a different coloured circle around my feet indicating I'm charging a different attack, the actual bow action is, identical, incredibly quick and dull. I feel it doesn't matter which attack I hit, the same thing will happen.

It feels a touch uninvolved that I've seemingly got my main two combo builders already and I have two ultra high power 5 combo point attacks already.

In Lotro or WoW, attacks feel different, animations are good, I feel like I'm directly effecting how the fight goes based on what action I choose. With this, its, press any button, fight over, all looks the same, utterly uninvolved.

its got the same Warhammer, too fast gameplay, ridiculously easy grouping, too big grouping for the big fights, no ones really talking, its just join, kill something big/elite/rift, leave group, bye bye, not a word uttered.

It feels like playing streetfighter but just button mashing and winning every fight without thinking at all.

Obviously things scale, and area's will get less crowded, but quests improving seems unlikely, general Warhammer feel of uninvolved grouping, pointlessly easy rift's, button mashing for any fight.

Personally I need/want that feeling of being involved in the story, some quests being ultra important, building a character that is involved in the world, and then end game you want that character you've already built, to have the best kit.

With Warhammer, I felt utterly removed from the character, the story/quest/world was pathetic and uninvolving, I never cared about getting better kit for a character I didn't give a crap about in a world I don't care about.

Its those things together that make a MMO, community in Warhammer blew exactly because group content was so "easy mode" , there was no need to find a good group, or ask for help, it was all essentially automatic, the lack of real communication killed the entire feel of the fact it was an MMO.

I'm just feeling all the same things, and seeing all the same idea's, rifts of public quests, where you auto join groups, say nothing, kill a few waves, spam any attack, see a uber boss die in seconds, get loot, leave party, get really really bored.

Games are to easy.

I played everquest and they did the same thing there, after mimicking things like MUD games they tried to make it easier and dumbed down the game.

EQ was hard, ultra hard and people had time to chat, to spend time dreaming about the planes and get that armour, I did.
The time spent, with the reward gotten, was 1 year or so.
now, I get it in what 3 days?
I spent 3 months to get to level 28 and I played a lot.
For some level 28 could take 2 years playing 2 hours every week.

Now, some argue we should have hardcore back, I am one of them to force, people to behave in groups and to talk to another.
Problem is that games changes, and people expect things which then make it hard to produce such a game
due to the risks involved.

Complex and hard, allows a better gameplay which todays games dont have.
its way to easy.

Now, I still enjoy Rift, as they done some scaleability especially as it seems with dungeons, maybe with pvp, and the verdict is still out there for me about the game, as far I enjoyed it.
If I enjoy it and can play on well I find out. Hopefully ahrd enough for people to chat ;)

I agree on the chat.
I play on argent.
pve/rp server.

Well having played in 3 beta's, we decided to roll fresh chars on the guardian side last night and I think we all agreed if that was our first experience of Rift we would never have pre-ordered.

There were simply too many people in the area's to enjoy the questing and game, it reminded me of Aion when that went live it was ridiculous !! .. Rifts were over as they started and you were lucky if you got a hit in ... however judging the game if your under 15-20 isn't prudent, you will not have experienced the Major rifts, Invasions and elites !! The game never leaves you with nothing to do, your levelling from 1-20 is more getting a grip on your class and learning how to play it.

Anyway, really enjoying the Chloromancer/Storm/Elem build, I have a personal tank tons of HoTs and DoT's and AoE thats practically spammable, mana pots are a must or your useless. Did a load of Warfronts at 10 and it worked pretty well won five and got my PvP blue staff that looks awesome :p

Played for a couple of hours last night, I only got up to lvl 7 as I was trying different combo’s out etc.

The game IMO is very similar to Warhammer online, in terms of graphics and UI style , the only really difference is the calling combo’s. I think somebody mentioned it above, not much of a story, just pick up quests, go kill this and go pick up 5 of these, and I also read that Rift has PQ’s just like War has??

As I said only got up to lvl 7, so I’m sure the game does change(I hope) a lot and it does get more of a story and hopefully the quests get a bit more interesting.

I tried all 4 classes and mixed up a number of callings to try find the best combo’s. I will do that again tonight and the next few days , and will try see what works best.

Bard/Ranger was good as well as the Druid/Shammy, also tried a Necromancer/Stormcaller and the Warrior/Pally.

I’m not a big fan of War but will defiantly give this a try as Wow is just getting smame old and for some reason my PC will not play DCUO.

I don’t think I will play past lvl 10 in this beta as I don’t want to spoil anything once it comes live in a few weeks.

What is the best tank calling for a Cleric, I see people were talking about that last night?

I felt much the same as you during an earlier beta (see my early post in this thread). I simply wasn't enjoying my experience - the game felt to be very much on fisher price training wheels. At that point I was pretty much ready to turn my back on Rift entirely.

However other board members here gave the impression that the game merchanics improve, the hand holding settles down in the higher levels and the gameplay becomes more compelling. The quests become much more interesting. I especially enjoyed the pranks, bullying and revenge quest line between students in the mage college.

I have to say that the people who said the game improves past the first few levels were right and I have changed my mind on this game.

At your level, honestly the mobs are wet paper bags and you would have to really try hard to get killed. The quests and general structure seems geared very much for a true newbie experiece - in my view the initial experience it was pretty tepid. The Guardian intro experience grated with me (think EQ2 Qeynos). I'd have liked to have seen an option to skip the intro part in the same way Lotro does.

After perserveing through to the teens, the encounter mechanics and questing structure changes for the better. I've reached level 19 on the Guardians side and am enjoying the experience thoroughly. I'm glad I stuck it out.

Coincidentally it's the mid to late teens where you start having a decent amount of points and souls available and can really experiement with a spec that suits you.

You said you were not enjoying the ranger soul - why not drop it in favour of other souls. My initial warrior class choices turned out to not be as I thought, so I just focused on alternates and found combo's. I found various combos that worked much better for my style and were much more fun to play. If none of the souls in the Rogue class seem much fun, try a different class.

Taking part in Rift encounters and fighting their dynamic raiding parties is a lot of fun, but I agree that there isn't much communication in public groups. Choosing an appropriate spec helps a lot, I switch from dps to aggro tanking and let others do the dps.

I'd suggest find a regular group (from this board /hint ;)) to play regularly with and let the masses zerg around. In towns I find random players more communicative. IMO this is a problem with the free beta being so popular. The live game is likley to have players more spread out and mature as the game progresses and people will need to speak more.

Really all I'd say is that the game didn't really show itself properly until the teen levels. It's still in beta and free - try in to the teens, try out different soul combos or even roll an different class. I honestly didn't regret giving this game a chance over the initial rough start.

snipQUOTE]

I know what you mean....
I have to say I feel simillar but still will give it a go, and am keeping my fingers crossed it will get better once you get bit higher lvl.

I still have sub for WAR and depending how I feel about rift I will suspend it or just get rid of rift and stay with WAR.

Main 2 reasons I got Rift are :

waterfronts - mixing people from different servers
Some best players/guilds from WAR are moving to Rift( thanks to that, order will be even stronger on KA ;)

and main problem with WAR is to big gear diff at top rr lvl's

So we will see how it gets :)

maybe tonight I will get more time to play, and fingerscrossed that it wont be overcrowded ;)

bah you've convinced me to play more :p despite me having to run the game on low settings (installing a q6600 tommorow which should help).

Enjoying this quite a bit. Get a bit bored with my char at times but that's only because it's a beta and I'm aware I'm going to lose him soon! Can't wait for the real start.
