Just a heads up for those of you with a limited edition / rare / prestige motor over 10 years old really.

I've been getting quotes of between £950 - £1500 for the 620ti (and some silly ones too) but in the end gave Peter Best a call on the suggestion from some of the MG owner's club.

It's always been hard to insure the 620ti, at 197bhp most young people with one end up planting it into another car, person, house, lorry... etc etc.

I have a non-speeding conviction, live in a middling postcode for quotes, and I'm 21 so I am obviously likely to end up wrapped around a tree.

£367 for the year, fully comprehensive! There's a 5000 mile limit, but I'll probably never get near that. So the car was £180, the insurance £367... just wish fuel would go down now. :D

Try a classic policy if you drive anything remotely unusual or rare, and over 10 years old. I was just a bit surprised.

* Standard vehicles – no modifications
* All drivers have held a full UK or EU licence for at least two years
* A single speeding offence within the last 3 years is acceptable; any other convictions are not
* No fault claims within the last five years.
* Maximum of three named drivers in addition to the proposer
* If named drivers under 25 (max 2), then the proposer must be 30+
* Drivers under 25years of age are limited to cars with engine capacity under 2.0L
* BMW’s restricted to a maximum engine capacity of 2.0L
* Vehicle is used for Social, Domestic & Pleasure use only.
* Cars must be garaged or parked on the drive – street parking is not permitted
* Mercedes convertibles must be garaged
* Vehicle is not to be used for weddings
* Policy includes commuting to and from one fixed place of work as standard.

A few conditions mind....

Good result for you by the looks of it, no use to me!

BMW engines must be very powerful!:p

A classic policy for a rover 620 turbo? Sounds more like you have a normal 'limited mileage' policy, in which case I'm not surprised it was cheaper for you.

BMW’s restricted to a maximum engine capacity of 2.0L - doesn't that then exclude many of classic BMWs that such a policy should cater for

Hmm I don't have any convictions within the last 3 years but I have 2x CU80 within the last 4 years, would that matter? Also do they use your no claims bonus? I'm 23 with 6 years ncb so I can insure a Xsara VTS for about £400 normally but I wouldn't mind insuring my 1999 MR2 also if I could wack it on a low mileage classic policy for 300 odd quid if they don't use your no claims.

It's specifically a classic policy, I couldn't get one for my old 600 diesel and they confirmed the 620 turbo was indeed a 'modern classic' (in their words).

I spoke to their Everyday department first, who quoted £2,000 then recommended I speak to Classics.

Excludes a few of the desirable ones for sure.

Glad an '02 Turbo would be ok..... :D

Is the Rover 620ti a classic car in the same way that Eddie 'the eagle' Edwards was a classic ski jumper?

:D:D:D:D

My DC2 (modified) was quoted at £273 on a 5k mile classic policy through Peter Best. PRetty awesome but am going for a £500 deal through Graham Sykes that includes my no claims and mileage can go over teh initial 6k if required. Peter Best was a hard 5k cap.

Interesting, do they still give you no claims bonus? as a lot of classic car insures don't. :)

Nope, full on 'future classic policy' so your no claims doesn't get used. Ideal if such a car is your weekend/track toy, but not so ideal if you leave it 2 years and your no claims disappears!

Or an old banger it seems? Your car doesn't seem to fit into any of those categories.

Seems a bit weird that a 150 quid banger can be covered.

Thats harsh, the man been told its a classic already!

Are you the proposer? It say's you must be 30+, yet you're only 21, unless the 30+ thing only applies if you have a named driver on there too?

Contradict much?

Also you can't drive to and from weddings. :( :p

My Golf is due for renewal next month, I'm paying peanuts anyway through a standard insurance policy, I wonder how cheap this place will be for me? Mods may be a sticking point though, I'll ring 'em and see....

Calling it a banger seems a little unfair, it runs beautifully and has had a lot of work done that didn't need doing, but I did as I had parts and wanted to make something good out of bad. :)

What makes it a banger? I'm curious.
