One of my Hard Drives is showing up in Windows as an SCSI device, rather than ATA. I dont know why?

I currently have 4 HD's in my computer. An 80gb Intel SSD, a 1tb Samsung F3 and, a 2Tb Samsung F4 and an old 320gb WD.

All the drives are connected to the motherboard via SATA cable.

When I was installing the F4 a month or so ago I noticed that it showed up in Windows device manager as an SCSI device rather than ATA.

I switched the SATA ports with the 320gb WD and now the WD shows up as an SCSI device.

Can anyone explain to me, why this is happening? is it a problem?

I have also noticed that the WD drive now appears in the
"Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" list. That is not very desirable as I now run the risk of accidentally disconnecting my HD when I want to remove and USB key.

Is the WD drive connected to either the Marvell or Gigabyte ports?

Windows will call anything it doesn't immediately recognise as an ATA drive as a SCSI device, it makes no difference whatsoever to it's operation.

As for it appearing in the remove hardware list, this can be disabled for the Marvell ports in the driver. Otherwise just be careful.

Thanks for the reply.

The drive shows up as ATA when connected to the Intel ICH10R controlled ports.

However when it is connected to the Gigabyte SATA 2 or Marvell 9128 ports it shows up as SCSI.

I have now "fixed" the problem by plugging it into my sole remaining ICH10R port.

However the question remains - what is wrong with the Gigabyte and Marvell ports?
