Hi guys,

im currently looking for a new phone, ive got a sony ericsson payg phone and its dying on me. I pay £20 a month for simplicity and have been looking for a good phone for about £25 a month.

I went on mobiles.co.uk/carphonewarehouse and found the google nexus s on 3 with 500mins/unlimited txts and 1gb net for £25 (only issue is that it costs £100) however there is an offer through quidco for £50 cash back if you take the a contract.

Basically im wondering what people think about the phone, ive check the official thread and its started to have a bit of bashing in it. Im not fussed about dual core phones as i doubt id need that much power. There is more than enough memory on it and i cant say im bothered about its lack of 720p video recording.

Im just looking to see what you guys think really or any other helpful suggestions would be great :)

Cheers

(This is my first post in the mobile forum, be gentle :D)

Yeah the official thread is not very useful compared to threads for other phones. I have had this phone for nearly 3 weeks now and it has been pretty good so far for the price. Its quick, its clean and the call quality is great. Your right that it doesn't support 720p video at stock.

I figure the bashing is mainly based on the fact the Nexus s isn't any better than the Desire HD or the Galaxy S (they're roughly the same price and performance) despite it being newer and the fact the Dual core phones are already announced with better displays. However, I wanted a basic stock android phone for the next 2 years and thats exactly what I got. Depending on what your current phone is, and after trying out the Nexus S (do try to go to carphone warehouse and have a play) you may like it.

I got mine at mobiles.co.uk on Orange on a 2 year contract for £25.54 a month (with 300 mins, unlimited texts and 500mb internet, the phone was free. But for more mins (600 mins) at the same monthly plan with T-mobile its £29.99 for the phone.

They aren't redemption deals and the price is reasonable for what you get (remember to call in and cancel the paper billing). The phone arrived quickly for me (Ordered friday night and arrived Monday morning!)

I got cash back for the purchase too so thats worth doing. Also find my post in the Nexus S thread with pics of a case that I bought online for £4.99.

I have a Nexus S. Had it for around 2/3 weeks now as well.

Prior to this I've had an HTC Hero and an HTC Tattoo (needed as a second phone for a couple of months) and, of course, the Nexus S far outclasses them!

It is a lovely device to use and to hold, a fully unlocked bootloader and first in line for Android up dates will keep it a very useable and customiseable device for a long time imo.

As has been said, it gets knocked because it came out 6months after the Galaxy S and isn't leaps and bounds ahead of it. I guess it all depends on what you have now and what kind of price you can get one for. I bought mine sim free for £250 (private deal) and sold my Hero for £80. So all in, it cost me £170 - and for that, imo there's no better phone out now or in the near future!

Would I pay full price for one, or be stuck into a contract for 18months to subsidies the cost of one? I don't think so, no. I would've stuck out with the Hero.

One thing I miss from the HTC phones is Sense.

Logically, you should wait so you can see how it compares to the Atrix and Galaxy S 2 in a few weeks. Both of which are guaranteed to outclass it considerably from a hardware perspective (not just dual core) and the software will be a matter of opinion.

There is nothing wrong with the Nexus S, its a solid device but its only popular due to some people preferring stock Android and wanting very fast updates.

If you're looking for a cheaper contract.

£24.90 a month including the phone.

300mins
300texts
"unlimited" data on tmobile

Cool, ill check that out. Thanks for the reply's.

Just in regard to the waiting for the d/c phones, £25 a month is my limit and when these new phones come out they wont be on the £25 a month tariffs with anything as good as the 3 offer, by the time they are at something i can afford there will be something newer and shinier out too.

The only other phone i like the look of is the desire s that isnt out yet and it wont be cheap enough for me until again something new and more awesomer is out.

Im not even sure i would use a dual core phone to its potential tbh, ill go have a look at it tomorrow see if i can see a demo phone.

What accessories are good for it?

cheers

Well, the fact its dual core is a bonus, I doubt anyone will use it to its potential. Its mainly there to back up the 1080p HD video recording (which you might benefit from), also there is the industry leading screen on the Galaxy S 2 to consider.

With regard to deals, there are no official figures yet but you probably will be able to get one for £30/35 on a 24month contract with a free phone. You can get that down and on to an 18month one if you want to pay cash upfront for the phone I'd imagine.

Also, dual core will use less battery power (so will the screen), and it will have a 1650mAh battery which is more than most current phones.

As it appears you aren't into phones you would probably be very happy with a Nexus S, hell, I would be too if I HAD to have one for a set period of time, but the fact is there are better phones on the brink of release (from an average consumer point of view) and nobody can deny its a wise idea to hang on for a few weeks.

Entirely up to you though :)
