Chicken pox parties - nice or nasty?

Yea my brothers wife got it when she was pregnant and the first thing the human body thinks (through evolution) is 'this is life threatening .. dump the baby' even though with modern medicine it's not :(

Sorry to hear that.

My wife is expecting and we had a bit of a worry as her mother, who was visiting on the weekend phoned to tell us that she had shingles (chicken pox virus in adults can turn into shingles, and can give chicken pox to others).

Luckily we eventually established that my wife had 'the pox' when she was little, so not going to catch it while pregnant.

It's a bit weird having chicken pox parties, but I suppose it's a sign of the times.

I didn't get chicken pox until I was nearly 17. Not fun.

My daughter is coming up to 2 and hasn't had it yet, and neither have any of our friends' kids. If they did however, I would do it OP.

I remember getting my chicken pox on 2006.. my nuts swelled like tomato's :o

I bet the ladies would have loved how big they were at the time though.

What exactly goes on?

Do they play tag or something, and the kid with the pox has to go round tagging people?

I had it as a child, then caught it again, from my daughter a few years ago.

She was walking around nonplussed, I actually thought I was going to die the pains were unbearable. Left me with a tiny scar/dimple on my cheek, didn't ruin my rugged good looks though.:D

Read an interesting article a while ago about why they do not vaccinate against chicken pox. Basically you retain the virus with your system for years, and when your immunity reduces it can appear again as shingles. If you are exposed to chicken pox you are less likely to lose immunity, and therefore less likely to catch shingles. If they erradicate chicken pox - a large amount to the population would suffer from shingles.

Chicken pox parties are a good way to ensure children catch it young and also parents can control when their kids have it.

You can catch it multiple times if you're unlucky. A guy at work has just had chicken pox for the third time. He's also had shingles before too.

The virus stays in your body forever and hides near your spine, it can then re-emerge during your adult years as Shingles....it waits till your immune system is at it's lowest then launches it's attack traveling down the nerves from your spine to attack one side of your body.

I've had it and it's horrible...
