Chicken pox parties - nice or nasty?

I got it when I was 16, thought I was going to die. still have the scars to show.
Took about 9 months before I got my fitness back.

Never had it despite being round 4 cousins, many friends and 2 siblings with it. Have been to Docs about it as I am worried when my son might get it.

He said either naturally immune or didnt notive whne I had it (spots in hair etc). Strangly more likely that I am immune, I rarely get ill even with colds, had the flu once in 28 years. Reacted to the TB shot (heath test).

My wife gets very annoyed as she has about 10 coughs/colds a year, last time I had a cough I woke up with a sore throat but was better after breakfast!

I have a very good immune system :-)

My 3 yr old, 2 yr old and 4 month old all got it within two weeks (around xmas). Went like wildfire around the nursery the eldest two go to. We made sure they had contact with all thier cousins/friends childre make sure they got it too - wasn't what I'd call a party though!

Glad they got it whilst young.

My wife is expecting and we had a bit of a worry as her mother, who was visiting on the weekend phoned to tell us that she had shingles (chicken pox virus in adults can turn into shingles, and can give chicken pox to others).

Luckily we eventually established that my wife had 'the pox' when she was little, so not going to catch it while pregnant.

Correct.

You can't "catch" shingles (herpes zoster virus). Shingles is the re-activation of the chickepox virus (varicella zoster virus).

A person suffering from shingles cannot give another person shingles only chickenpox and only to those who have not had chicken pox before.

It has been recorded that exposing old people to children who have chicken pox boosts the older person immune response and reduces the chance of deveopling chicken pox.

I had it as a child, then caught it again, from my daughter a few years ago.

She was walking around nonplussed, I actually thought I was going to die the pains were unbearable. Left me with a tiny scar/dimple on my cheek, didn't ruin my rugged good looks though.:D

You didn't catch chicken pox from your daughter. You had a reactivation of the virus which was called shingles. It was purely co-incidence you developed shingles whilst your daughter had chicken pox, unless you have/had some sort of serious immuno defficiency like a bad case ofthe flu whilst exposed or something.

It's not something new! I remember hearing about similar when I was a kid in the 70s. If only my parents had taken me to one!

yup, thats when & how i caught chickenpox, way back in the early 70's my best friend had it & i was dutifully packed of to go play at his house for an afternoon, needless to say i caught the pox.

More like chav parenting. Let's see what else can we give them, mumps, the clap......

Nice troll for a reaction, doctors recommend getting it over with as early as possible.

My son got them at 9 months and it was a non event compared to getting it later in life.

Read an interesting article a while ago about why they do not vaccinate against chicken pox. Basically you retain the virus with your system for years, and when your immunity reduces it can appear again as shingles. If you are exposed to chicken pox you are less likely to lose immunity, and therefore less likely to catch shingles. If they erradicate chicken pox - a large amount to the population would suffer from shingles.

Americans do immunise against it, my friends had one of their sons come out in chicken pox while in florida and the american doctors made a big issue of it, like it was an 'outbreak' because they immunise against it.

I've never had them.

uhh, while I understand it is better for children to get it to develop their immune system, taking them to a party with the sole intention of catching it seems a bit weird...

Like some other posters, I'd rather see it come naturally. How would you feel if you took your child to one of these parties and it turned out to be very severe? :/

It's pointless going to parties because it's most contagious before the rash comes. After the rash and blisters start it's unlikely to spread.

It is not quite so simple as kids get it mild - adults get it bad - kids can get all nasty stuff like encephalitis etc. Now imagine you deliberately put them into contact with chickenpox and they were one of the unlucky few. Would you like that guilt hanging on you forever with everyone saying "its not your fault how could you have known" because I think those words would sound rather hollow.

Wrong it is contagious 2 days prior to the disease appears and then until the vesicles crust over. As it is airborne and spread by contact with the vesicles through skin to skin contact the blister play a big part in transmission.

No I'm not wrong, I said MOST contagious before the rash comes out. Which it is.

Wish my mother had taken me to one of those when I was a kid, I was 40 before I eventually caught it. Don't remember feeling unwell beforehand, just woke up one morning covered in spots and feeling a bit rough. Only lasted about a week but it's left scars. :(
