Meet Rococo - our new pet

i would love a lizard but i hate bugs.

is there a way you can feed them without having to touch bugs?

Crested geckos can live completly from a special powder you can mix with fruit :)

The geckos in this thread can be fed a complete diet of mealworms...which are just like maggots, and crested geckos can also have them as well :)

Apart from cresties i think all other form of lizard are insectivorus

Even if not, you dont have to actually TOUCH the crickets / locust :)

perhaps I should rephrase, what lizards are suitable for house roaming and wont kill you. :p

I generally let my skink out for a wander around the living room when I'm in there watching TV. I shut the door and theres nothing he can hurt himself on or escape through. He either sits on me on the sofa and watches TV or gets bored and goes off for a mooch around the floor. Hes fairly tame though and not afraid of people.

My beardie is out and about any chance he gets. will happily sit on your knee and let you stroke him while he falls asleep...more like a cat really, just with scales :D

hehe i used ato have a leopard gecko, they are cool pets just laze around until you through in some crickets...then bam turn into killers :)

I had a gecko once. One day i gave it some crickets as usual only to come back later and find that they had decided to eat the gecko which created a hole where you could see right through him. Sad times.

Either the crickets were WAY too big, your gecko was moulting, or this is that "Myth" that goes around and you are telling porkies...Crickets will, given the chance, nibble at any animal...thats why i dont use them, plus they look evil :p

I will stick to mealworms / locusts and my never ending cockroach colony :)

so how do you do that?

Chop sticks! :p

You can just tip them into the vivarium from the box. Used to keep common geckos and green anoles. Hate crickets myself, especially because one summer some got out and infested my house and garden! The noise drove me mad!

Cool pet! :)

Do reptiles show acknowledgement/affection towards their owners? Or are they largely independent and don't really care much for you? Genuine question :)

Acknowledgment certainly. They are pretty tameable, what they do could be taken for affection. Some can be, some not. Mine know when and where feedingtime is and are usually there waiting! Bearded Dragons have a tendency to 'glass dance' when they want to be out.

I found my geckos to be quite indifferent. One of my anoles liked being handled more than the other one, she wasn't affectionate in an appreciable way, unless you count not trying to bite as being affectionate :p

When I get home from work, mine will generally unburrow himself and come out to nose at the glass. If I let him out for a wander and I'm sat on the sofa, hes quite happy to come over and sit on me.

Although these things are probably because he recognises me from feeding time and because I'm warm to sit on! :)
