Dragon Age 2 - * Official *

However I am constantly amazed on these forums (and others I guess) how many people are willing to write off a game based on 30mins of play, thinking they have seen all that the game will offer.

The demo is supposed to sell the bloody game!, what's the point of a demo then?.

If i give you a car to trial run for 10miles and you hate it, you'd hardly come back and buy it. First impressions count

Anyone watched that video? Around the 3minute mark he is on about control and how they dont want the player to loose control by forcing them to see something...yet how many cutscenes where in that demo? I took my hands off my keyboard and mouse so many times to watch a cutscene...

Also I find it interesting how you guys are looking at what is and isnt an RPG. I am actually writing my dissertation on this exact subject. It seems clear that the "RPG genre" and "role playing" have two seperate definitions that go with them. I dont want to talk about it in here as there is already too much rage going on, I just thought I would share my thought on it.

Ok sure, give me the full game without having to waste my money and i'll reconsider that opinion. But since i can't get the game (legally) without paying for it i'm gonna have to base my opinions on the demo (wait a minute, isn't that the point of a demo?). If what people have said about the game being nearly finished before EA came on the scene then it explains things quite well. The game itself was great. The day 1 DLC (well Stone Prisoner) was also great. Return to Ostagar was absolute trash, cashing in on the usual DLC opportunities. DA2 has become even worse and was 100% designed for consoles. The game doesn't even work on a basic level without the isometric view.

So don't buy it. Get over it. Spend your money on one of the other great titles that are coming out this year.

Play the demos before hand though :p

Test drive them before hand though :p

Have all the people here complaining of the fact it is missing old school RPG mechanics they they sooo dearly love, played Planetscape, all the Icewind dale games, Balders Gate games, and Neverwinter nights titles? If not then with the money you save not buying this, buy all of them from GOG. They contain what you so clearly crave and will occupy you all year until DA2 is a long forgotten memory for you.

Revisiting The Witcher next in time for The Witcher 2 ;).

Aye I guess, which leads to another point of a demo: to decide whether you like it or not and whether you should spend on the final product or save your cash . I guess the demo has performed this admirably.

Some people here should be thanking Bioware. ;)

Fans of Bioware's games should be thanking them for ruining what they liked best about their games?

That makes no sense to me.

no - for producing a demo for them to discover that they do not like it and as such save themselves £30. ;)

Should every game they make be exactly the same? Aimed at exactly the same audience? Why aren't they allowed to try something different?

They have made plenty of different games - Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Kotor, none of which I liked, but that doesnt bother me.

None of their games have to be the same, but Dragon Age was always advertised as and meant to have been:

The fact that they refuse to maintain such a brilliant genre similar to the one that made them who they are today is ridiculous when a huge number of gamers actually enjoy the gameplay found in Baldur's Gate and DAO and want more of it. There is no need to dumb down everysingle genre of video game into a console hack n slash, what is so good about turning everything into the dame boring format for the same audience who already have more than enough games to play?

And actually, as you say, in trying to 'change' DA2, they have actually made it appeal to exactly the same audience as every other game they make these days. Ironic.

It's hardly a leap though is it? I mean Dragon Age had gore, sex, bad language. Hell the trailer even had Marilyn Manson as the soundtrack, it's not really all that similar to Baldur's Gate is it?

Those games you listed are all practically the same mechanics wise with the slightest of tweaks (Jade Empire Real time combat, Mass Effect more combat orientated)

I disagree, I found it to be very similar, particularly with the top down view camera, friendly fire AoE spells, and highly challenging gameplay.

doesn't fill me with optimism with regards to the up and coming SW: Old Republic MMO, as I have a terrible feeling it might actually be released on the consoles eventually...

I agree in some ways, any game released on a console as well means the PC will suffer because they need to simplify it, unless the game is too simple already, ala FPS with few key commands.

But some people, or a lot of people oddly can't understand the limitations a console has and how it translates into the game being worse for those of us who are used to more on a PC.

Still, I liked the demo, I'm going to be playing the full game.

ok played the demo now. Havent finished it yet though :D

graphics a bit meh
sound a bit meh

However i have to say combat was much more fluid and dynamic than DA:O
When i fought the Ogre i could actually dodge his strikes. I couldnt really do this in DA:O possibly because of input lag maybe? What i mean is sure i can react to a spell being cast by an enemy (e.g. sleep or freeze etc) by dispelling it or whatever but i couldnt react to quick strikes by the enemy. (ie dodge them)

In dragon age 2 i can do that easily.

In dragon age origins it was more management of the party whereas now we have a definite move towards Individual control and optimization of that gameplay. Have to say it was quite fun :D

Also i had no problems zooming in and out of my character to get a better view. True i cant zoom all the way out but i think the focus this time is different.

Felt more immersive than Dragon Age Origins. Possibly due to the tighter focus this time AND the increased cinematics and i would say the conversation wheel.

Anyway i liked it :) The skill tree looked fine as well. As long as they dont sacrifice things like the inventory (it didnt look finished).

I dont mind Bioware changing the focus to make the game more atmospheric and less about micro-management as long as they dont sacrifice certain RPG components.

So yeah quite impressed....i should go finish the demo now :D
