Operating profits at British Gas rose 24% in 2010 to £742m, its parent company Centrica has said.

The news comes two months after the UK utility announced a 7% rise in domestic energy bills, which it blamed on rising wholesale prices. (BBC online)
Absolutely outrageous for a monopoly privatised by Thatcher

Somebody should string up Sid!

Why are we not looking into starting a mostly nationalized energy company securing low prices for its primary UK customers? It works wonders in France through EDF Energy.

I hate to use the term 'Rip-off Britain' but...

RIP-OFF BRITAIN!

Notice how the energy prices shot through the roof a couple of years ago and they never went back down?

Incoming, a thread of irrational lefty-rage!

I mean, it isn't like they have expanded their customer base and diversified their product range or anything... No, it's all about the price rises...

Like anyone cares about their customer base or the diversity of their product range. It's about how much that bill is that comes through the door.

actually they gained like 200,000 customers last year too.

Sall good quit yer moaning could live in libya or iran

don't remember the exact figure wasn't really listening to the news this morning, but i know businessis good for them.

Asides every year they get accused of something, and no one cares.

A 7% price rise is better for the consumer

As an unfortunate energy consumer, I would love to hear that one explained :D

You can change suppliers. You can't do that when the council decides to spend 25% of council tax on inflated pensions, or when the NHS gives you MRSA...

As usual, people see a big number and get all hysterical, too put it in perspective:

1) Centrica margins are much lower than in businesses such as BT, Vodafone or the water companies (yet you don't hear people complain about them)

2) Only a third of Centrica earnings come from energy sales to households

3) It would take 10 years of British Gas residential energy profits after tax to pay for just one nuclear power station, and British Gas/Centrica are planning to build four with EDF

4) Much of the growth is to do with Centrica aquisition of upstream assets

But lets not let facts get in the way of a good rant

And how many left? I did for one. You do realise we have one of the most expensive energy markets in Europe?

It's net gain ;)

You do realise that a big part of that is continued refusal by successive governments to invest in energy production, or even to allow private companies to invest in meaningful energy production (ie not wind turbines and the like), leading to a large need to import energy subject to the vagaries of the market?

I've just changed to NP and saved a fortune..

You say 7% rise in domestic fuel bills is outrageous but what about other consumables such as food. Have you shopped at Tesco recently? Personally I think the current inflation rates are well under what they really are... I'm convinced that the retailers are adding to the inflation to making extra margins. We've noticed our shopping bills rise at least costing us more than £100 pm.. With that said, there's always that competition with other retailers.. ASDA, Sainbury's, Waitrose etc I can choose where to spend my money .. same goes for gas suppliers, telephoney, Electric etc..

How many people think a 7% rise on a low margin product faced with a near 70% physical product wholesale price increase is a bad deal?

Have they?

Yeah, they've increased their customer base, aquired various upstream assets in the North Sea, are investing in building nuclear power plants with EDF, invested £725 million in the Barrow offshore windfarm, signed a £2bn deal with Qatargas to supply LNG.....they don't hang about :p

That's Centrica not British Gas.
