Dead 2.5" HDD....

Well, being a clumsy prat I have just dropped my HP Touch-smart on the deck.

Now the HDD is dead, is there anyway to repair/recover the info on it, or has it simply gone the way of the dodo.

I tried plugging it into my Desktop, but my PC then fails to complete boot up, getting as far as the Windows & splash-screen.

Also I assume any 2.5" HDD is a suitable replacement.
 
Hook it up on a secondary SATA port to your desktop and then use the likes of Get Data Back which should recover all your files for ya.

Yes any SATA 2.5" HDD will be a suitable replacement but I would recommend the Western Digital Scorpio black personally.

If that doesn't work and you really need the data back you can always buy a second hand identical drive and swap the discs over that are inside, you can then put it back together and get the data off it.
This is only if your desperate mind but its not that hard to do.:)

The one that has gone belly is a 320GB Western Digital Black. I have tried hooking it to my PC but my PC then fails to boot up.

I have bought a 500GB 7200rpm Samsung as a replacement.
 
Sorry to hear you had the problem with a WD Black mate. I've had nothing but good experiences with them but there's always one I guess...

Well I did drop the laptop , It fell off my desk onto the floor, about 2 feet , I suspect that jarred the HDD somehow and now it is not working.

My own fault really for being clumsy.

It is going to make it awkward as a lot of the info I need is on the partition, HP do not seem to have the reboot discs online so I'll have to do it manually.

Luckily I have a W7 disc and the product key. I assume that like Vista et al, any W7 disc is OK as long as you have the relevant Key and that the disc is not locked to a specific key.

If it is then I am stuffed.
 
Yeah it should be fine. Worst comes to the worst you can make an 'all in one disk' by creating an ISO image from your Windows 7 disk and then modifying the ei.cfg file. The installation will then prompt you which version of Windows 7 to install (Home premium, Professional etc). You can use a Retail disk with an OEM key as well, so long as Hp don't use the same sort of activation method Dell use in which case the key on the sticker is not your actual 'licence key' as such.

I have never had that with Dell, the OEM key has always worked for me with Vista.

We have got HP to send me a restore disk just in case anyway. I expect I will use that one as the touchsmart software for the touchscreen will be included and easier to install.
