I've just found out that I've been left £1000 from my step-granddad provided that I spend it and don't put it on bills.

It hasn't fully sunk in yet but I've thought the one thing I'd love to do is upgrade my PC. Now, I can start from scratch.

Its been a while since I've been savvy with hardware so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a bundle from OCuk and a monitor that I could have for my budget.

Ideally, I would want some cash left over.

Thanks.

first of all what will you be using your pc for ie every day use gaming

Sorry, yeah.

I used to play games a lot but then I gradually slowed down. Now, the only games I play are FIFA and Steam games. Although, I will get back into games with the right system. New Max Payne, new Hitman, any new GTAs, Crysis 2 etc.

I think the main use for the PC will be as a media centre for playing DVDs (Blu Rays).

Thanks.

You can go wrong with the above......

Only thing to my liking I would change would be try to squeeze the 2600k cpu in to the build... thats only becuase I wantthe best... but the 2500k is still a great chip.

The VAT really kills any value however!

If you didn't go for a bundle, you could have something like this:

Not sure on ram, OCZ have been fine for me & they're on offer too. And a 2600K is in there along with a new LED monitor :)

++ Missed out blu-ray :p If you change a few things you can fit one in there :)

You may need an operating system so i would go for a cheaper graphics card as you will mainly use it for playback and some gaming. A 6850 at £135 or so or even a 5770 at £90.

The sammy P2370 is on offer for a stonking £140 a good monitor.

With Bulldozer on the horizon and with current intel chipset bother, I would hold off main components choice for 4 weeks or so and see how both camps develop.

Ofc, can still make a very nice gaming rig for £900:

Thanks. The one thing I'm worried about is that I've never built a PC from scratch before.

Are you definitely against getting a bundle?

I'm not definitely against it, however you'd have to settle for a lower spec to stay within budget and learning to build a PC is a good experience and a lot easier than most people think. These days I consider PC building as 'lego for big kids' as it's basically sticking lots of bits together. There are countless guides (both written and video) to be found online and if you have any problems there are lots of helpful people on these forums who'd be willing to help out.

Its up to you whether you want to do some assembly or not :)

But the pre-built you mentioned is well under budget for you to get a monitor too, and it will perform well for what you need it for :)

++ Try go for the SSD upgrade if you can!

Personally don't find that capacity of SSD's to be worth the money at the moment, but that's just me. Add one in later if you want.

E: And don't be scared of building your own system, it's really quite easy. My friend bought a £800 system a few days ago, with very little knowlege at all. When I got to his house to build it for him he had already done it himself :p

Cool, thanks. I will build it myself. I'm sure it will help me.

Thanks again. Gotta wait for the cheque so I don't know when I'll buy it.

If you're not sure when you're going to buy it then just do yourself a favour and check up on latest offers etc. It can save you a lot of money.

:)

Cheers, will do.

[EDIT] Actually, I can save money on the HDD and use my current one?

I have just bought a Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache. Hmm, I guess they've stopped doing my one so I can't get the name. Mine is the same pretty much but 500GB.

If I keep that I won't need to reload an OS or anything.
