wow after almost 44 years I have purchased my first jar of pesto!. (tescos finest pesto alla genovese)

I have had it in the past (without knowing what it was) and after reading the back of the jar I'm intrigued by the ingredients i.e fresh basil, pine nuts, garlic, virgin olive oil. parmegano regiano and pergarino romano cheese.

and what an amazing taste.....so far I have been using it on simple things

creating a chicken pesto sandwich with mayo tomatoes and lettuce

spreading on a margharita pizza before baking (amazing how the pesto melted and combined with the cheese)

adding to cooked spaghetti and sprinkling with parmesan (with bolognese on the side)

spreading on garlic bread

any other pesto fans out there? I would appreciate some more simple ideas on what to use pesto with and also what other types are worth trying.

cheers :)

Pesto's awesome.

Once you have had that delight, try sundried tomato pesto. Stir it through some plain pasta, it makes a pretty decent snack.

You can also use it as a marinade for meat before e.g. eating it with pasta.

thanks I will have to pick up a jar of that too :).

I actually narrowed down pesto after purchasing a greggs chicken pesto baguette! and thinking I have to make this myself. The greggs pesto seemed to be the green stuff but i think also had sun dried tomatoes in it too?

My first experience with pesto was when my friend had it on some pasta in a packed lunch at school and let me try it, I absolutely loved it.

Then went onto buy some at home, put it on some pasta and my god it was awful, so overpowering just filled your mouth up with herby flavour =/. Then had it in a sandwich and it was just way too overpowering.

Never did ask where he got his pesto from because it was one of the nicest things I have tasted, ah well.

Have you ever thought that you might have been using too much of it?

It's very easy to make actually - and great fun because you can change the proportions of the ingredients to suit your own tastes. Unfortunately I love loads of garlic and the wife likes very little, so we always have to make two batches :)

Pesto and asparagus risotto goes down a treat.

Pesto is pretty easy to make too and tastes great home made.

Try out all the different varieties you can get also, such as white pesto and sundried tomato pesto.

I knows it's a bit dull but I like nothing more than a bowl of spaghetti with pesto and extra parmesan cheese on top and plenty of salt and pepper.

In the summer I normally do a pasta, pesto, bacon, toasted pine nut, extra v olive oil salad for BBQs

It's also great with cheese in stuffed chicken breast.

Making your own pesto is the way forward, very simple and far better than all the stuff from jars.
I just use pestle and mortar, but it's even easier to make if you have a food processor.

Tomatoes + pesto = win.

Edit: The gf recently made a parsley and walnut based pesto... Not sure where the recipe was from again, sounded like it would be pretty bland but it works. :)

My girlfriend got me into it - pesto, pasta and capers with some grated cheese on top - such a quick, filling and great tasting meal!

Avoid the sainsbury's light pesto though, it literally tastes of nothing!
