So we had an incident at one of our offices 100 or so miles away yesterday afternoon which meant I needed to get up there pretty sharpish.

Didn't have my car with me that day so had to hire one.

Turned up at the hire car place and was given a 60 plate Passat diesel, think it was the lower powered model (the one below the 140).

Thought that's a bit meh but it'll do the job of lugging me up there and back.

I'm ashamed to say that I actually quite liked it :(

Maybe it's the sleep deprivation talking as I didn't get back until the early hours of the morning, but it was comfy, reasonably nice place to sit, heated leather was cosy, the entertainment system was pretty nice (touch screen nav thing), and lapped the motorway driving up with ease as expected.

Yes it's not quick, doesn't have any special in the handling stakes, the interior plastics for all those concerned were a mix of nice soft ones alongside some horrible hard cheap ones.

But it did the nicely, it was a relaxing sedate drive with the cruise set to, er, 70. No thrills but tbh not what I wanted after a 20 hour or so day, arrived home suitibly tired from the day but not exhausted.

The red glow from everything inside was pretty cool as well :p

Off to order my pipe and slippers today I think.

lol have driven plenty, hence the concern I'm having with my health over it :p

Infact I'll probably be having an afternoon in the company of a C4S again tomorrow (never get tired of borrowing that!) to try and restore some balance.

In all seriousness I wouldn't have one, but was just pleasantly surprised I didn't hate it.
 
There is only one question left to ask, do you still like that changing gear nonsense? If you do, you got a few years left yet.

I myself had to drive a manual something or other this morning, doing the kangaroo hop stop at the lights without the clutch depressed, reminding me that at 44, it is all over for me, and autos only!
 
I've been driving A8 4.2TDi's again, thinking I need one of these now, proper bit of kit, though steering is a laugh having to turn the wheel 4 times as much to turn a corner.

Thats a good thing, it means the steering is light, shape up man :D

Funny you should say that, if I was buying a car and had a choice of a DSG type thing or a manual box at this point in time I would probably choose the DSG :o

After driving an R32 with it a while ago I really liked it.
 
I think the divide between a good car and a poor car has narrowed in recent(ish) years. Many manufacturers who were renowned for rubbish cars have upped their game and i think there are a lot more "not bad" cars out there today, than years ago.

Ford have come on leaps and bounds, so have Skoda, Renault and Citroen (the DS3 looks like it's going to be a hit), and more recently, Hyundai, Fiat and dare i say even Vauxhall has come a long way!

There hasnt been a "bad" car produced in 10 years if all you want is a car/transport.

Anything new now you have to say is pretty good in the being a car stakes.

Its just car enthusiasts cloud the job with other criteria that need fulfilling.

Anyone driving mainly in a congested city these days who wants a manual car really is a bit special.

This last week iv had the pleasure of driving to Brixton every day and its just a ****ing chore, and thats in my car, i honestly feel sorry for someone in a manual.

New one?
The new one's a much nicer place to be in than the old one. Even the new A7 is a lovely place to be. Not a patch on the new CLS though..

I only said it because I did about 1200 miles in a new Passat, haha :p

Rover P6's ride quality is pretty damned good, though, especially on the rough stuff. Bit wallowy at speed though - typical 60s/70s supension and tyres.

At least I've driven all of them so can compare ;)
