Do the young of today feel optimism for their future?

The young are going to have a much better standard of life than us - 16 year olds have already got PS3's - I had to wait until my 30s! they should be optomistic.

21 years old. The country has been going down the toilet for the past 13 years and there is no evidence to show that this trend will be reversed.

I don't plan to hang in the UK any longer than necessary. Make money, then 0121 to a nation with a more stable economic climate.

er, we did have the biggest economic boom in the UK's history during those years :/ We all ended up richer than any Briton EVER has been before.

If that is your definition of 'going down the toilet' - boy, you're in for a hard time when things do get tough in a year or two .. :)

How can people be richer when the government is in so much debt. On a small scale yes, but the larger picture is that the UK is screwed.

If the government takes out a loan at 10% interest, then invests it in something that pays a 20% return, the government is in debt AND the people are richer.

Debt does not always mean something is going wrong ...

The UK isn't fine. But to say having debt is always a bad thing is simplifying a complex issue.

I'd say most people from all classes are richer.

Am i missing something here lol,how on earth are we all richer, when we people of this country are paying more and more for everything and getting very little in wage rises.

I think when the world is going people way they think life is great and they are optimistic.

And of course the opposite when things are doing turd.

Ask someone what they would do to improve the world and most of the time it would be things that make their life better not the rest.

I think the goverment has had a systematic plan over centuries to slowly degrade the quality of life. Never has your financial security been so poor. The days of only rich being able to get anything they want are here once again. The outlook for humanity is not optomistic and no policies are set to make this so.

Do the young feel optimistic.....what difference does age make it, young age does not guarantee whether you will die young or old.

Correct. I wanted to know this. If were getting richer how is it people can't offord to live. Most people have debt because of this. Not been funny here but I bet 90% of this forum members has some sort of debt.

Whats the point working your whole life, becoming richer if you can't enjoy yourself. Doesn't make sense to me. People work till they drop....People are far to greedy these days! Here is an example. Where I work in the education sector... Me and a work collegue calculated the average life expectancy after retirement.... over 20 known people... within 3 years they died. What is the point working your socks off for this. Why don't people stop been greedy and try to enjoy life.... not tell lies to people on forums or lie to others to get people to like them or whatever... boils my blood.

I work 37 hours a week and I get enough to get the essentials in life. I don't care because I am happy right now. This is how it will stay.

I agree that Debt is a major factor in producing an unwelcome feeling toward life, however this country and its current situation does contribute to my feeling of distain and unhappiness.

We live in an age where the benefit scrounger if king. He/she can have as many children as they like, live the life that they want (Yes all these idiots want it to smoke, watch TV and drink and have no aspirations to better themselves) and of course never have to work. I on the other hand aspire to better myself, work full time, pay my debts and dues and contribute to society. All my wife and I want is a child. We won't have a child because we are responsible adults that know that having a child is not just a ticket to a free house. I could go on about why the benefit system creates an unfair system of living, but I won't.

When was the last time you tried to apply for a job? I have applied for about 50 jobs in the past 2 years. Do you know how many interviews I have gotten? 0. Do you know why? Becasue the jobs that I am going for are going to over qualified people who are out of work trying to get back on the ladder and will take anything, even a slightly lower paid job below their level of development. Where does that leave me? It leaves me unable to find another job that suites my current skill set, meaning that if I want to get a new job I have to take a pay cut and work back up to this level within another company. How is that meant to generate a happy feeling toward this country?

How about touching upon the housing market eh?? When I look at properties to buy I feel sick to my stomach. How can one justify spending £120,000 on a pile of bricks in the middle of a hell hole in Cardiff, where you are more than likely going to get robbed or have your car nicked as you sleep. How can we as a couple save up £35,000 for a 30% deposit within a reasonable amount of time whilst earning an average salary? I will tell you how, by moving in with her parents for 5 years. What a way to start married life!

There are many reasons why this country is a depressing place to live, not just because of debt. I doubt everyone feels the way I do but at present I find it very hard to find any real reason to want to live in this dump. I wish emigration were an option for me, but alas, knowing my luck I doubt I would meet the entry requirements!

I totally agree with you. I am looking at properties and the prices are a joke, I could get a huge house in Australia for the price of a small hovel here. I am lucky enough to have a degree and that may be my ticket out of here.

I'm 23, i still feel the future is bright, we just have to work at it.

That said, i do activly avoid the news because the news is over hyped over endulged dribble designed to create fear and panic in times like these.

Yeah... National debt ballooned under insane levels of public expenditure, the public sector is now larger than the public sector and whatever increases in wealth were mitigated by punitive levels of taxation.

If you have aspirations to do exceedingly well, this country is a cesspool. Entrepreneurial spirit is crushed, idleness is rewarded. The lunatics are running the ****ing asylum.

Not too sure... I'm at uni, second term through a 5 year course ( mech eng masters, with a year in industry slapped in the middle)... did ok in jan exams, way better than i thought i would do... but i do wonder how long i can keep up studying... i'd much rather be in a job... I'd be utterly devasted if i got a 2.2 in the degree ( but veyr chuffed with a 2.1), so if i feel that i'm not going to be clever enough for it, i'm going to have some tough decisions.....

so on one hand the 5 year course gives me some time to possibly ride out the economic crap storm we're in, and on the other hand i could end up half way through a degree i dont like with no light at the end of the tunnel.....

i think i want to move abroad when i'm older.... not really too sure though.... i don't aspire to be uber rich, just comfortably well off and happy, with stuff to do...

I am 24 and feeling optimistic about the future, I've had a pretty good life so far, and am very close to doing in the next 2-3years what most people do in their 40's-50's. So I am looking forward to the future:)
