So yesterday (Saturday) I recieved a fixed penalty notice for parking on a yellow zig zag outside a school. The timings of the zig zag are:

But it's worth noting that the street is resident permit holders only Monday-Saturday 8am-6pm in the marked bays.

Since I wasn't parked in a marked bay which the resident permit holders only rule applies, and I was parked on the yellow zig zag during the allowed times, does it make my ticket void? Here are some pics.

As you can see I was parked outside of the marked bay, but on the yellow zig zag line, but didn't violate the time for the line - but the entire street is resident permit holders only Mon-Sat 8am-6pm.

I was under the genuine impression I was allowed to park on the yellow zig zag as long as I didn't violate the times, which I didn't.

Shall I pipe down and pay the fine, or do I have a genuine case?

Please advise. :)

paying now and then appealing to get it back is probably the best thing to do. Don't these things usually increase in price the longer you don't pay it?

You might be in the clear.

You MUST NOT wait or park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers, on school entrance markings (see 'Road markings') when upright signs indicate a prohibition of stopping.

From here.

I personally would have parked their thinking the same as you, so would be interested if it's wrong

No, no, no. Don't pay if you want to dispute it, that's about the most stupid thing you could do.

I had a PCN middle of last year and had to pay but appealed and got all my moolah back within about a month after a clear letter to them. Though slightly different situation as I was forced to pay because they towed my car :( They were trying to claim I was parked in a bus lane even though there were no road markings, nor any signs stating this.

EDIT: are FPN's different to PCN's or is it just a different kind of PCN?

It says no stopping, not no parking - no?

Yellow lines of any type are usually huge NO when it comes to parking so I assume the sign is only there to stop people stopping when dropping the kids off.

I would dispute it, but I would not of parked there.

It says no stopping between the times in the first pic. I didn't violate that time.

There is a single yellow line there as well. Was there a sign anywhere indicating what the parking restrictions were for that?

I would imagine the single yellow extends further past the yellow zig zag school entrance and therefore has different rules.

I agree it is misleading though.

I know, but you parked - not stopped :p

I personally would have treated it like a normal yellow line (IE no parking) with an extension to prevent stopping also in the designated times.

You can never park there
You can stop there outside of the times
You cannot stop there inside the times

Would be my understanding.

dont pay, challenge it by notifying them of the time the ticket was given and the times displayed. Simply state you was parked at a time which doesn't fall within the restricted hours, be ready for them to play this card though, if it was within ''those'' hours.

If it is a controlled zone then any single yellow line, parking bay and I believe school zig-zags fall under the times of the zone. What is the description on the PCN? It should detail what the Parking officer thought you had contravened.

Dispute it, They will put your fine on hold till you either win and it's a none issue or lose, From the point of losing you normally have the 14 days or what ever it is to pay up from the date of the decision.

I disputed one for the girl friend late last year, It was pretty clear they were in the wrong. It still took over a month to get a reply from them.

This sign I believe is for a clearway during the times shown and there is also a yellow line, which only needs to be signed at the zone bounds, which it seams was also operational (prob the same times as residents bays are operational).

its a bit of a nightmare but those are the rule.

I think the ticket on those grounds will be ok.
